It seems you can boost core race characters and get your heritage armor, but you have to be exalted with your faction.

See:

No, you don’t. You can do it at any reputation level now.

My bad, I did correct my post.

I believe the allied races still require you to level a char yourself.
I could be wrong though; it’s been a while since I leveled one.

Yes, You’re pretty much correct.
Allied races must level to 50 without any boost or race change. Once they ding 50 - BAM achievement pops. You have the Heritage armour.
Standard races can boost, race change or get to 50 however they can. But then they need Exalted rep with their faction (easy to get using a tabard and TBC heroic dungeons) and then do a quest chain (not very long but can be fun). Once you ding 50 you should get the quest pop up, you might need to visit your faction capital first.

Not needed anymore. I was bored and made trial characters and got all standard races heritage sets.

Ah, interesting.
I used to run Sethak Halls to get the rep, I got the Raven Lord mount doing this so don’t need to that anymore.

I don’t have the Orc or Night Elf armour yet from the normal races.

Just make trial character and start doing heritage quest

Only UD needed to do sl quest where you clear uc from that green stuff. On trial character i just took portal to oribos and was able to start that quest. After that i was able to do heritage quest.
