Hey so I watched Blizzcon a few days ago with a friend of mine and usually we are mostly hyped for the new class/race, but I wont talk about the new dwarves as that’s a topic for itself. But we we’re definitely not prepared for Hero Talents (in a neutral way), we are undecided on this topic and want you’re take on it.
Personally I think it’s a good replacement, because we still got more things and reasons to make alts or to main new things via Hero Talents (even though we got FATEBOUND for Outlaw instead of BARD).
I’m actually very happy if we continue with this pattern of maybe new talent trees or new specs or in general more being done with existing classes instead of a new concept that tends to be hyperspecific as most of the classic fantasy classes are already taken.
What are your thoughts on the new System (excluding balancing cause that’s always a question with new class/abilities)?
At the moment I am pretty unenthusiastic, because it is just reskinned covenant soulbinds, but with hero spec flavor.
It can be good/neutral (with some passives that might give some flavor), but it can also POTENTIALLY be good.
The potential I see is mainly in the form of cosmetics/quests/vfx.
If they just add the talents then its meh, just another row of passive talents. If they actually use it to also add quests/customization/lore tied to those hero specs like the green fire for warlocks.
Damn, now that you mention it, I think that bard would have worked well (unless they keep it for a future class).
Just gotten the impression that it’s just the newest talent row or system that they have slapped onto the game each expansion. That may or may not be just previous skills shuffled around.
Themes/lore wise some sound really cool, other sound so generic and uninteresting. Like you pointed out, some missed opportunities for sure… Like we did warriors get Colossus and Slayer that are just so flavourless, instead of Blademaster?! It’s one of the oldest warrior fantasies, been there since WC3, just seemed like the obvious choice that doubles down on the game’s pre-existing lore. One could argue “that’s too specific to the orcs” but then their 3rd one is Mountain Thane which to me sounds 100% wc3 dwarf or myabe Vrykkul.
Thinking about it, nearly non of the “too race specific” arguments make sense as so many of those hero talents sounds very race specific. Sunfury screams Blood Elf. Dark Ranger well do we even need to elaborate? Herald Of The Sun sounds 100% Tauren.
Speaking of which, let’s talk about what they will actually do… If they’re going to be mostly aesthetic with minor skill improvements, like let’s say, class skins. Then finally I’d love to play a Tauren Paladin that will actually have tribal sun themed abilities over Holy Light. Absolutely perfect.
My concern is that like nearly everything else, there will always be a clear winner in terms of design and output. Just like covenants people are going to say “no no play what you want” but then we saw the stats… The overwhelming majority followed the most functional choice not the fantasy driven one (Preach or Bellular made a video going through all the numbers). At least they claimed it’s a very low friction system that people can just spec in and out of.
Let’s see. I agree with their reasoning as to why they didn’t simply add another 10 points and some new talents. We all know where that leads. As long as they keep iterating on core talents trees, swapping what doesn’t work, and keeping things fresh without needing constant overhauls, then this system has potential. They’re building with a modular set up in mind, so in theory, it’s future proof too.
You’ll get puritans here saying it’d just be a hunter… ignoring the fact we got multiple melee specs using bladed weapons or maces shared between them.
