Hero Talents, yay or nay?

So I just had a discussion with some friends and I want your guy’s opinion on it.

We spoke on if we like the implementation of Hero Talents. They said that they dislike that its so fundemental to the game instead of more of a flavor pick, that the classes feel more like their hero talents then their spec, for instance oyu dont play assa rouge you run deathstalker cause thats what your rotation is revolving around.

I am of the opinion that this was an innevitable outcome and i like them, mostly, i think their couldve been more flavour but mechanically, regardless of how impactful they are, if they effect actual gameplay their will be a bis for each activity and you will be expected to run it for higher difficulty content. This was innevitable day one from hearing it for me cause they were replacing another row or more talent points so i only made sense to me that they would mostly feel like that. The only way they avoid that imo is to make it purely cosmetics, its the covenants from SL all over again.

What do you think, now with season 1 coming to a close, do you like how hero talents have effected the gameplay or did you expect more/less?

I like them, but I agree it would’ve been cooler if blizzard would’ve gone more bonkers with the cosmetic route, with new animations, visuals (without being too messy for the sake of it). Cause in the end I don’t really choose what to play, I just go with whatever sims best and feels fun. If I don’t like the gameplay I choose a suboptimal hero tree which is more fun, but it has nothing to do with the class fantasy.

Yeah I agree, its the only reason I’m looking forward to feral for season 2, cause we run wildstalker now on everything and i think it looks cooler and is more interesting to see then another red line across the screen.

If I were to do what I want with the game for next expansion, I think I would try to integrate the best hero talents into normal talent trees and keep the interface for cosmetics and cosmetic only customization

It is just another classpower-pick. And for some specs i can’t help it but it are abominations which require all kinds of WA tracking.

I have to wait probably a year before i can try them, but expectations are high at leader for evoker

How come? You dont have the expac or you just take a really long time with leveling?

This is a bit criminal imo, the game should not rely on WA but it’s almost mandatory sometimes which is such a shame

I dont have the expansion, in waiting for it to be included in the base sub, because i have lost interest in mythic raiding i dont need to buy expansions.

So far I’ve only experienced the hpriest’s Archon hero talent, my experience with the hero talents obviously is very limited. I enjoy using Halo altho I miss my Divine Star, from the little I’ve read about other classes/specs I noticed more of them suddenly have a mandatory pick.

Besides that I still don’t really see what it adds. I’m not negative about it, more sort of… neutral, which seems a bit odd with all the hype they were announced with. At that time I felt they should be cosmetic only, and I still feel that way. The fun additions could have been normal talents.

I’m boring, I pick whatever does the most damage. I just go to my class discord and see what is recommended and use that. But I treat hero talents the same way I treat the rest of the taltent tree.

Having said that, I found both hero builds enjoyable to play.

I think the themes could have been better and there are some that are significantly better than others. I find any that involve summoning creatures e.g. demons, horsemen, celestials, are far more interesting and popular as well. However, Paladin Templar does go brrr…

On alts, I pick what is more fun, on my main I pick what is fun and imo is best (not always wowhead copy).

I enjoy the game more after hero trees, but some specs have non interesting ones, those I skip (after BFA/SL I almost quit, for me the hero talents saved my wow experience, otherwise I’ d have quit, not another experience like that please !

I don’t like Halo e.g. on priest, and 2 specs us that hero trees, so I play disc  .

On tanks I prefer actually they have both defensives and DPS talents, or 1 defensive focused hero trees and 1 DPS tree, mostly go for just DPS.

I e.g. don’ t like either of the brewmaster trees, so I don’ t play it, doesn’t catch me, but I don’ t dislike brewmaster or something.

I look for some class fantasy as well, for some it doesn’t matter, but I enjoy having some of that.

Also hero trees that just give passives and have no new animation or whatnot, I skip those, just my personal preference.

As a healer, I found the Hero Talent system, specifically the Oracle tree, underwhelming. I simply allocated points to all available options without much thought, and the resulting new ability didn’t significantly impact my gameplay. The “Hero” talent feature felt like a superficial addition to the expansion.

They added a lot of design bloat and spell modifiers, and people play what’s best and not what they like.

Overall, hero talents did not improve gameplay.

Class skins would have been more successful IMO.

Although I enjoy the new hero talents, they’re clearly a balancing nightmare and should be scaled back a bit so they’re not such a monster.

Depends how hero talents suits your playstyle.

Personally as enhancement shaman i hate both, since 1 focus on 2 ranged spells (as a melee lol), meanwhile the other focus on a totem (which is horrible for m+ enviroment on my opinion).

My issue with this system is that there is barely any choice once you’ve selected the Hero type. You basically just fill in every box then over the 10 levels. Why even bother with the points and putting them in a tree. Just make it how it was in WoD, every level you just got a new ability (usually a passive).
Keep the choice of Hero but take out the 10 points to fill in the tree, unless you’re going to add in some actual decisions to choose different abilities.

It had no effect on me whatsoever. Might as well not have been there.
BUT! With the 11.1 changes coming to Pack Leader that will hopefully change.

At the very least it will enhance my spec fantasy and it’s a tribute to Rexxar, who’s my favorite WoW character, so that’s good!

I would still like it to just be a cosmetic thing and ACTUALLY be impactful in that particular area. So your class wouldn’t play different, but feel and look different.

I like them on paper and generally they’re fine in implementation but things like a warrior having to spec into spinny blade twirly whirly to make full use etc is… unwelcome.

So I think it be better if the keystone talents in the hero trees linked to multiple abilities.

Problem here is that to make it feel different, it inevitably has to play differently. Ior ex if you´re a frostmage and you´re spamminng frozen orb and icelances, it´s going to feel like frozen orb and icelances no matter what color the visual effects have. The only way to make it actually feel different is to add something in that breaks up that scheme, such as an instant cast Frostbolt, which then requires you to play differently. As long as your pressing the same buttons at the same time as before, it will still feel exactly the same.
