At the start of Midnight, there were some posts about how using only ground mounts made the game more immersive. I tried this, and personally loved it. By slowing down and reading all the quests, reading item tooltips and taking in the world, my love for the game grew even more.
In patch 12.0.7, Heroic World Tier was added in the new zones, making mobs much tougher to beat. In my opinion, when you fight mobs and don’t instantly beat them, this also adds to immersion. Thinking of these things, I’d like to suggest “Heroic Servers”.
Here are some ideas for what Heroic Servers could have:
Heroic World Tier mob difficulty
Ground mounts only
Disable quest arrows and areas (blue circles) on the map and minimap, so you have to find where to go through reading the quests and exploration
Add a temporary cooldown after using portals (you have recently used a portal, please wait X minutes before using another)
Add profession items that are helpful while leveling, to promote the use of professions before end-game
Those are just a few possibilities. I’d love to know what you all think of them, and maybe even add more ideas of your own or take away some of the ones I suggested.
Some people play WoW to do it as fast as possible - skip all quest text, skip cinematics, fly as fast as possible from point A to B etc. There’s nothing wrong with that, people can play however they like. I just think it would be a great idea to add something that slows the game down a bit (for the players who want it), and promote getting immersed in the world rather than crossing off a to-do list.
I already read all the quest texts and more often use my ground mount in new content. I’m not against it but there are ways people can do all of this if they really want to without a HC server.
I would like to see it kinda. The game needs to slow down again, and I’m tired of chasing the same carrot every season. I’m against flying completely, because it’s hurts the game as a mmo genre, and I hate it, but it’s too long to explain why I think that, and to repeat mysefl again, so maybe it would be better to make a separate topic about it.
The problem is that, they are making non flying zones miserable to travel with too many mobs that pulls and want’s to kill you constantly like they did with Naigtal. Great, I’m happy, they added it, but why there’s so many mobs that makes very hard to travel through the zone especially on alt without gear… And then they wonder why ppl hate non flying zones. Zones from previous expansions, especially Dragonflight are maded almost for only flying, so making an Heroic world wouldn’t worked at all. Traveling on ground mount there is a nightmare.
The game evolved too much into the direction, where people get constant dopamine, instant rewards, and where ppl can go from point A to B in 5 secods not paying attention to the world, making those people lazy, that will complain when this comfort is being taken away. (There’s 0 complains there’s no flying in the mmo that never had flying, it’s just like with a kid and a candy. Take the candy, good luck).
Anyway. Disabling quests arrows, and indications are too much imo. Adding cd on teleports would be just a bit annoying, not hard or something. They could make an “rpg” option to enable if you want tho. That could be cool.
The game would need to be slowed down over the years to the state like it was before, and only then it could work maybe, but I don’t see it coming.
Heroic world could work if done properly similar to hc world on legion remix (excluding the fact we were one shotting mobs on hc later anyway), but even after that I would prefer to put this time and resources into making a better core content so idk.
Heroic world was just an old WoW before those all simplification changes done in past 15 years, and I miss it, but I don’t want to play the content I played before going to classic.
This is exactly to either spend more time killing enemies on our way to our target rather than ride through them, or to promote grouping up. After all, if we can simply ignore enemies while on ground mount, there is no gameplay element benefit over simply flying above them. They had realized that from the very early game which is why they implemented the much-hated Daze effect.
How is flying stopping you from reading quests? Everytime new content releases I do every quest in every zone and read them all, then fly to my destination.
The heroic zones they added recently don’t feel any diffrent from the other zones, maybe because I’m only playing one char that is 290 atm but I don’t feel any difference while killing mobs
If people can stop asking for it on regular retail then I’m all for it, I do all the other things on immersion but for RP prep sake I want to keep flying around and also generally believe that arguements about being unable to enjoy the game with flying are a bit dishonest in that they’re often argued in a ‘this is true for everyone’ way (if you didn’t do this, this isn’t directed at you), I can stay immersed and in an exploring vibe on a flying mount just fine personally.
At the same time, a heroic mode makes perfect sense to have flying disabled.
My questing while I do read them are often for me just something to get out of the way so phasing doesn’t separate me from other players because I didn’t quest far enough.
Personally I’d suggest it to be a mode rather then a whole seperate server, seperate server doesn’t make a lot of sense to me when we have tech like the one that creates pvp mode we can apply
So we are talking about Classic Hardcore here in setting of Midnight?
You see for starters we have power creep vs scaling problem. Your character power fluctuates so much that one level you would oneshoting tens mobs, but the other you a beaten by two of them.
Then there is designs of the zone, where in Classic devs figured out patrol paths, guards and Humanoids running at low hp screaming for help, while now mobs most likely are seeded automatically with some brush like tools of MS paint, just specifing the dencity of the mob placement and their variety.
In a age of automation, low budget, short deadlines, AI usage I do not expect them working on world that would be interesting to adventure in. All we get is an amusement park we fly by on a jet speeds.
Unfortunately it will be as dead as Warmode. Players will always take the path of least resistance unless the rewards are much better.
An MMO I know of that does exactly this type of gameplay where you can speak to an NPC in the main city and choose HC Mode or Nightmare Mode. Each mode offers better gear rewards than the other which encourages players to switch to those modes. Nightmare mode offers Legendary gear and higher gold and crafting material yields but you can only do that mode in a group. It’s not very popular though but then the player base is not that big anyway.
HC mode is (imo) not popular because it was only fun in Legion when you over powered everything and wanted mobs to last a little bit longer than one second. Also you could solo it.
Levelling up in it was a challenge some enjoyed (self NOT included) but they could build up ways to get better. The current HC mode does not really have this and is specifically for people to group up in, unless you over gear it and thus do not benefit from the rewards.
Also the zones are a royal pain with their strange movement systems that make a lot of people feel sick, trigger migraines or just plain annoyance from Val’s lovely slow/dmg curse debuff.
I hope they learn from the metrics that the majority of players don’t like this and if they do want to implement HC modes, at least make it soloable.
