What mistake?
World of Warcraft have two teams what interchange between expansions, and this is confirmed via evidence of a developer mentioning it during a stream.
It really feel that one of the teams is more Alliance aligned and the other is leaned towards the Horde, BfA was done by the Horde, Shadowlands is being done by the Alliance one, that would explain why they gave the Alliance High Elf options without much rolling around in Shadowlands alpha, as opposed to the game director telling Alliance players to roll Horde during BfA alpha.

Can i play a Blood Elf on the Alliance?
Damn i can’t want to quest on Eversong, pick Alliance after it, and raid with my guild as a Blood Elf, Arcane Torrent is way more useful than Spacial Rift for healers. Who is going to be the Alliance Blood Elf representative on Silvermoon?

We’re not asking for green eyes, new jewellery, Silvermoon, Eversong or Arcane Torrent. Most of us aren’t even asking for paladins, and I, for one, am asking for warlocks to be restricted to the truly voided options, and not for the high elf options. Not demon hunters, not strider mounts - not even a racial mount or hub.
Just hair. Just proper high elf options.

As insignificant NPC’s yes. Nobody cares about that when there are Alliance friendly Orcs, Goblins, Blood Elves and Tauren running around the world too.
But to elevate them to playable status would be awful and rightly so.
And yes, neutral Pandaren were a gigantic mistake since it opened the door to this debacle in the first place. They’ve also been rendered completely irrelevant to any Horde/Alliance story since MoP and I expect their neutrality is in part to blame for that.
Cant wait for the Blood Elves to be elevated to this ghastly role of faction intermediaries in the future. 
We call her Valeera. 
It was a sarcastic take on the idea that Blood Elves are a neutral race now, natural hair and skin color for Void Elves don’t equate that.

Umm no we don’t want Green eyes, Eversong woods, or even Arcane torrent. That’s an exaggeration.
And even if one or two person asked for those things, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Blizzard wouldn’t do that.
It took us 15 years to get Skin colors and eye colors. If Silvermoon was to ever be given to us (just based on your example) it would be another 15 years 
by then my son or daughter will argue in this forum instead

Several, whole factions of them.
I strongly suspect that pandaren being more unpopular has more to do with them being fluffy pandas and not filling any required fantasy, than them being neutral. I equally strongly suspect that both Horde blood elves and Alliance void/high elves will continue to be very popular, and for the Alliance, far more popular, with a similar, albeit not quite as strong, similarity on both sides of the faction divide.
Are we seriously back to the “slippery slope” kind of arguments? Like those we saw used against marriage equality and whatnot? Please let’s not go down that path.
They burned down two capitol cities… Maybe we’ll exchange Silvermoon for Exodar.

That’s how you end up with jewellery all over.
You hear anyone complaining?
Runic/arcane tats. Prioritize the face.
Longer hair that does not come with some ill fitting accessory.
Scarring
Dark Ranger/San’layn appearance. More partial to the San’layn myself since it isn’t so heavily tied to one specific class.
Jewelry enabled for the men
Scrap the shorter ears and put in something similar to what the Nightborne adorn their ears with. Half Elf trash belong on the Alliance anyway.
The basics really.
