High Memory Consumption

(I didn’t find any recent topic about this)

Ever since this Wednesday, the game seems to be using a lot more memory than before. It already used a lot, now it uses even more. I have Task Manager always running on 2nd monitor while playing, and while before this Wednesday Task Manager would report WoW.exe using around 3-4 GiB of RAM (even though actual usage was around 10-12GiB), since last Wednesday it reports WoW.exe using around 8-10GiB while actual usage exceeds 15GiB.

I disabled all addons and even Scanned and Repaired the game.

I dont see any unusual thing about that.

The memory usage depends on addons, how long does the client run, and the most important thing how many system memory do you have physically.

ATM my client takes 11G RAM. I dont care at all, i have 64G system RAM. The game is stable, so if 11G then 11G.

I have checked mine, i’m using anywhere from 9-12 gigs of RAM when using wow, with or without addons, looks like memory usage has double or even tripled, its rather unusual as normally it uses anywhere from 3-5 gigs of RAM.

About 5.5 GB used after starting WoW, driving around in Undermine few minutes, HSing to Dornogal and checking AH. Biggest addon memory usage is TSM at ~115 MB or so. Total of 500 MB used by addons.

CandyBuckets use 74 MB. Why I even have it enabled.

Some more info:

  • Game starts running normally
  • At some point it starts to stutter. I have not yet found what causes it. It can even happen when entirely alone in my Garrison.
  • At that moment, memory usage shoots up (the game starts using 3-5GiB more of RAM, CPU usage goes up, GPU usage goes down).
  • The stuttering happens for about 30 seconds. After that it resumes to normal operation, except it doesn’t release the extra RAM it reserved.
  • Again at some random interval (as low as 15mins and as high as more than 1 hour), it will do the same, it will increase RAM usage again until system RAM usage reaches 98%

The above were testing with no addons running. It started this Wednesday.

Yep, there’s definitely something weird going on.

Saw my memory usage at 95% of 16 GB and WoW hogging over 9 gigs of it. Game starts with around 5 GB. It’s never been that high. Normally my systems memory usage is at 70-75% with WoW and a browser with few tabs open.

Noticed the same thing. Usually the game runs as it always had, but suddenly out of nowhere an hour or so playing I see my ram usage on MSI afterburner jumping from ~18-19 GB to 21GB for no reason whatsoever. There’s definitely something weird going on

My system has 32GB of ddr5 ram

I did some more testing yesterday, with a clean install and no addons. Game starts with 4 GB ram usage. Just standing in a city for 30 mins and my memory usage was nearly 7 GB! And it just kept rising.

People in Reddit been talking about the same for months. Their suggestion of turning off the “Advanced Work Submit” seems to drop ram usage couple of gigs for me. But that’s not a fix.

I just came back from a 5 month break and it’s safe to say I’m leaving again if this situation isn’t resolved before my game time runs out.

Did a couple M+ runs and i’m almost at 12GB now according to task manager.
Something is definately up.

Restarted the game, now at slightly above 6GB in Dornogal… half of what it was before :stuck_out_tongue:

EDIT:

Did another dungeon after the restart, at the entrance before the start of the key, 5,7GB RAM, but at the end 10,5GB.

So it most likely has something to do with addons or weakauras.

10,7GB in Dornogal now and slowly going up instead of going back down to ~6GB.

It happens even when afk in the Garisson with 0 addons. I tested it.

Ugh… Simply afk in Dornogal for 15-20 minutes gave me +4.5 GB more consumed RAM, Memory is somehow leaking.

Are you guys by any chance using lossless scaling app?

Nope. Nothing external.

Dropped Liquid Detail from fair to low and now my mem usage stays under 5 gigs. Even inside LoU.

Weird.

I tried it with all graphics settings set to the absolute minimum, but with all the new Advanced Features at the very bottom enabled. It showed memory leak even in that case.

I’ll check again later this evening, maybe they’ve shorted it out with the new patch.

Seems like the patch fixed it for me, so far.

When you close the game check task manager if its actually closed, because i noticed a bug recently where it sometimes remains open my memory usage was up to 33gb at that time because there are 2 wow instances 1 of the old game not exiting properly and the game i just started up.

Chances are you have wow running in background 2 times using up more memory that way, so you might not even have to lower your settings, you just have to check if its still running after you exit the game, or you will run out of memory when you start it up the next time.
