Hi, I’m looking to reroll on a new server. I recently came back from a lengthy break and want to start a new toon on a new server as my old realm is classed as ‘low’ but to be honest it’s dead!
Obviously I don’t want this to happen again so I’m looking at high pop and full servers. I’ve just rolled this toon on Sylvanas, where I do already have a couple of lowbie alts from a few years back so already have a bit of gold etc on here.
I have also been looking at silvermoon as it is classed as full so very populated but don’t have any toons on there atm. I was also concerned about queue times and lag etc come shadowlands release.
Out of these two, or any others you would suggest, which would you pick and why? I am after a highly populated alliance server with plenty of guilds to choose from, a good selection on the ah (easy to buy and sell anything I want) and hopefully some friendly mature people on the server too.
I would say any of the top 5 Alliance realms - Silvermoon, Sylvanas, Outland, Ravencrest, Frostmane - will provide what you want.
The very largest realms, Silvermoon and Draenor for Horde, have seen some complaints of server lag, like lag opening mail or buying auctions, for a couple of weeks at launch of patches. Every realm has seen complaints of lag in the zones intermittently through BfA, for which we haven’t seen an explanation or cure.
If you like the atmosphere and people on Sylvanas, I don’t see why you would want to move from there.
OTOH, when I wanted to establish some Horde characters, I chose Draenor rather than, say, Stormscale or Tarren Mill, and I’m quite happy with that choice. I would be equally happy with Silvermoon for Alliance.
Thanks for your input! Yes I understand what you mean, in theory Sylvanas should give me everything I want. I was just wondering what the population difference is between high and full?
My old server frostwhisper was considered high until MoP then it steadily declined, hence why I was considering silvermoon.
I understand this is less likely to happen now a days as people are more reluctant to move servers if transfers are offered but don’t want a repeat of what happened.
The thing that put me off a full server was like I said queue times and lag but I guess these only happen at the start of an expansion. It is also harder to get names on a full server though.
Wish blizzard would give us some real information on what they plan to do about connecting servers in the future, would help with these sorts of dilemmas
Blizzard have carefully disabled the features that used to allow people to count population.
At the moment, the best indication I know is
(sort by “Alliance”)
these numbers are not for the full population, but, for short, of the potentially raiding population. However, you can sort of compare the relative sizes of the realms by these numbers.
And as Zeleik and Chronormi pointed out, you should exclude Frostmane now. I typed it mostly by muscle memory. Sadly, that server has declined.
Ravencrest/Outland are PVP oriented realms with the most high rated players stationed there. => Avoid unless you’re 2400+ exp’d ; and even then still avoid them since pvp restrictions are long gone.
They should merge/connect all the low population realms into a few new group of servers.
Some are so low populated that they can merge/connect 10 and it would not still be labbeled as high.
Its a disgrace that this goes on for so many years without being fixed.
