Hogwarts legacy vs wow

I’m playing it and it’s nice, also I get to play it with my girlfriend who actually can’t stand WoW so I’m definetely having a break from Warcraft for the time being. It’s a shame it’s not online though, it really feels like it could’ve if you look at the map and overall structure, I guess it would be nice to RP or even just to explore together. I guess it couldn’t be as much fun though, if it were to be online!

Might as well compare the Witcher 3 to WoW.

I don’t think that’s how WoW’s subscriber retention works.

When you’re in the WoW loop, then it’s very easy to stay in the WoW loop, because the activities are familiar and repeating. It becomes habit to play.

But once you make the conscious decision to pause your subscription and do something else, and get distance from the habit to do your weekly vault and raid and such, then there really is nothing that pulls you back into WoW. And then it’s super easy to just keep that subscription on pause.
It’s only when Blizzard has a new major content patch that there’s a strong pull to re-activate that subscription again and get back into the hamster wheel.

When people go to play Hogwarts Legacy for a few weeks, then they’re not going to go back to WoW again immediately afterward, because those few weeks of Hogwarts Legacy will have broken the urge to keep up with the daily and weekly WoW activities. So they’ll go do something else. Game, TV, books, sports, whatever.
It’s only when WoW releases new content that the game pulls those people back in again.

That’s how my breaks have always been at least. Checking out new Civilization update for a week, end up staying away from WoW for 6 months.

If you’re not enjoying WoW take a break and enjoy your Hogwarts. Seems win win.

How is it a win-win?

It’s an obvious financial loss for Blizzard if WoW players put their subscription on pause for any length of time.

It’s an obvious loss to WoW players if too many people take breaks at once. That devastates guilds and communities.

And if it accelerates a long-term subscription decline for Dragonflight, then the risk that Blizzard will cut the expansion short – like they did with Shadowlands – is only going to increase. And who wants that?

Even if you’re the person who’s going to play Hogwarts Legacy and being excited about that, you’re still kind of rocking the WoW boat that you may wish to return to afterward.

In the old days it was win-win because WoW had so many players that it didn’t matter if people went off to play Age of Conan or Diablo III or whatever. It kind of does now. That’s why Blizzard focuses on retention. But it’s unlikely they can retain everyone from playing Hogwarts Legacy.

sorry no. sayin “most peolple will play it for that amount of time” is ridiculous. im barely playin DF lately and im already double than 40.
You can never compare a MMO and a single player game.

I don’t work for Blizzard, so I can freely to tell people to take breaks and come back when they feel like it. In the past I’ve taken breaks to enjoy other games for a while and it’s great.

It’s a single player open world rpg guys, Like someone above said. The game has an ending. I am going to make a character and replay for all the 4 houses. But after that it ends.

Hogwarts legacy wont kill or hurt WoW anymore than Red dead redemption or the witcher games did. No one even thought to compare them in the past to WoW… Only reason you do now, Is cause a certain streamer introduced you to it :eyes:

On the forums people seem to compare all sorts of games to each other regardless of genre etc

Yeah they do.

A thriving Auction House economy runs on having a large amount of players needing materials and crafts. Less people means less trade.

The forums are going to facilitating more discussion when more people are engaged in the game.

And so on. An Online Multiplayer game lives and dies by its playerbase, regardless of whether you directly interact with other people or not.

The box product experience of Dragonflight is around between 30-100 hours depending on your approach and completion desire.

You go through the leveling and questing experience. You play through the dungeons and the raid, and you tap your feet into PvP.

Then you’re done.

Any time spent beyond that is just you repeating the stuff above for bonus points, be it achievements, transmogs, or doing higher difficulties. That’s extra.

It’s the exact same with a single-player game.
There’s the initial playthrough of the content.
And then there’s the extras. Playing it on a higher difficulty, unlocking achievements and skins, and so forth.

Just as there are people who are very devoted to all the extra gameplay value of WoW, like doing achievements and collecting transmogs, so are there people who aren’t.
And just as there are people who play single-player games over and over for completion and difficulty, so are there people who just do the initial playthrough and consider it done.

WoW is no different from other games in that regard beyond having filtered most of its playerbase down to the kinds of people who are very much in it for the “extra” gameplay value of achievements and transmogs and difficulties.
But we still see with every new WoW expansion that lots of players quit after a few months, because they’re done with their initial playthrough and have no desire for the “extra” of achievements or transmogs or higher difficulties.

Well I’ve often been told I work for Blizzard in disguise, so I try to see it from a more nuanced perspective where people might have an interest in both WoW and other games whilst still recognizing that competition from good games is perhaps to the gamer’s benefit, but it’s no longer to WoW’s or Blizzard’s benefit. And if you’re a WoW player at heart, you’re kind of rooting for WoW to have success, because that success becomes yours to reap in the game. And as does WoW’s failure.

Sorry but you are blinded by hatred.

And im still convinced that compare a single player game with an MMO is like compare a chicken tikka with a chocolate cake: they are both edible but are different.

That’s kind of a harsh thing to say because I share my opinion on how I think an upcoming game release will affect WoW.

thing is to a lot of people wow is a single player game in 2023.

Yet it could so easily be a win for Blizzard if the player then returns for an extended time feeling refreshed as opposed to burning out completely.

I won’t be playing Harry Potter as i think I may be the only person who hates the whole franchise.
