Holy Paladin vs. Resto Shaman

So, I have started playing healers at the end of BFA as druid, then disco and also as disco I went into SL. But I really didn’t like his shadow mend playstyle in pve he has now, and so I’ve started looking for some other healers and in the past few weeks I’ve tried almost every healer class and spec there is and there is not one I wouldn’t like (except for disco), but I can’t really decide who should I main. I’m deciding if I should go with Holy Paladin or Resto Shaman, because these two I enjoy playing the most.

I would like to mention, that PvP is my priority and I’d like to hit some high ranking, but I couldn’t play healer, that is bad in PvE, because I’m also wanting to do some mythics - nothing that extreme, like +20s, but would like to be able to do +15s.
Raiding is not really my thing, but I’d gladly listen to some thoughts about that too.
And lastly, I’m looking for a main for more than just this expansion.

I love both of them, I love Holy Paladin’s playstyle, the holy shock legendary technique, the new holy power bar (even tho it’s also his weakness) and the fact that he’s plate melee healer, even tho I know it’s harder then ranged healer. His heals feel powerful and I’m really having fun playing him. I have him on ilvl 177 and I was enjoying doing normals and heroics. But when I got into mythics, I started to feel that his AoE heals are not that great. Sure, it’s not that bad, but I’d say it’s a lot harder to keep your group alive than for example with Shaman.

And that’s what made me create a trial Shaman yesterday. I did some world content and some pvp and even thought it was all new spells to me, I was doing really good, talking about the pvp, but I haven’t tried him in dungeons yet and also, it’s just lvl 48. But I love that class theme, his AoE and also his burst healing. But since I never played this class, I only know very little of it.

I don’t want to be wasting any more time with other healer I’d maybe then just forgot about, I’m eager to get some nice gear and do some serious rekt. So I thought you guys here might help me/give me some advice about:

  1. Who has bigger skill cap?

  2. Who is probably going to perform better in PvP in shadowlands?

  3. Who is probably going to be perform better in PvP in the future, therefore is more suitable to be my main?

  4. Who is going to be the “safe pick” if we look to the past how they performed back then and how they are doing now (I have Shaman’s BFA on my mind)? I don’t want to play a class that is one expansion on top and the next one the worst one.

  5. Who is probably going to do better in PvE in Shadowlands?

  6. And once again who is going to perform better in PvE in the future?

I don’t really care about who’s the easier one, since I want to make a main and then really get to understand that class and get good.

Answers like “Play what you like” won’t really help here, since I like both classes, both playstyles and both themes.

Soo, what do you think guys?

Both are quite easy to play in PvE. Shaman is harder to play in PvP imo.

You don’t have to add “in Shadowlands”, we are IN Shadowlands since a month+ now :P. But paladin is probably stronger in PvP overall. With a good comp, you can do crazy stuff (like “bubble the seed” “bubble the druid about to cast convoke” etc). Shaman is also great. They are both S tier.

I cannot read the future. A nerf can always change everything.

Again, can’t predict the future.

Going to ? Again, we are IN Shadowlands. That’s happening right now. RShaman is stronger in PvE right now. He has an interrupt, good mobility (not druid tier but still), good utility, great HPS. HPal is good, but not on that level of OPness.

Aaaaagain, I’m not a time travelling wizard, and nobody is. Some classes were good at the start of an xpac, and were nerfed into oblivion right away (BFA’s subtility rogue), some other classes were godlike at the start and stayed godlike for a whole xpac. We just can’t predict sh*t.

In the end : If you focus on PvP (especially Arena), I would say HPal. If you focus on M+, I would say RShaman. As for raiding, depends of the needs of your guild, both HPal and RShaman are needed.

If we are looking at past performance paladin is the deffinate pick. Every season has had viable push comps with holy paladins

I want add here that there are a few key points to consider

1 every ideal raid comp will always use at least 1 holy paladin for aura mastery
2 holy paladins scale better than shamans with secondaries as so traditionally do better as the expansion goes on
3 the holy paladin can do passive and active damage where as the shaman can only do active damage. Although this is likely to be irrelevant if all you are looking for is a 15

Shamans are stronger right now but it’s the first teir they have been viable for in a very long time the paladin is not far behind right now but I think it’s reasonable to expect the shaman to fall off a cliff as the expansion goes on. Which would follow the trend of previous expansions

I’m likely to be a bit bias here but my pick would be the paladin we have always been in the top 3 healing picks for m+ and raids where as shamans traditionally have been closed to the bottom.

I’m not even sure why you bothered to answer this question. She asked based on past performance that is information we have. And it’s reasonable to expect this expansion to follow the same general trends of the last 3

I’d like to thank both of you for your replies, it gave me some new ideas what I could do with my pally and it also helped me decide!
