Homophobia in roleplay needs to cease

It’s because to them, their hatred and ignorance isn’t ‘politics’, but they see it as a majority-held opinion (which it isn’t), and this causes them to accuse any semblance of positive representation as political, as they just refuse to try and understand that we don’t need any sort of ‘agenda’ to exist as we are, and to play characters we can relate to

Weird that there’s never a source backing up their made up views regarding their race’s culture on same-sex relationships. Almost as if it’s all inserted by the player themselves.

i still never got an answer to this :frowning:

come on people where are these things that prove it’s normal in the WoW universe…

The sentinel that got flirted with by another sentinel in Wrath scoffed and rolled her eyes. That clearly means that it’s frowned upon night elf society!

It couldn’t possibly mean anything else, like just a playful “ugh”. No not at all.

In some ways good that you haven’t. It’s not something that I’ve seen on a daily basis, nor something that is as common as other issues within roleplay (There’s probably more Goldshire shenanigans happening than people RPing homophobes, sadly) but in a way that almost makes it all the more infuriating. Because the majority of people do know better than to take real life harmful views and inject it into roleplay, but that minority is still quite happy to throw the LGBTQ+ community under the bus all for a drop of edginess that could be easily attained through other character traits.

Ah yes, remember the history lessons that taught us about alien space goats backed steamtank driving knights being pushed back by brontosaur riders with voodoo lasers during the late 1400s?

If WoW is a medieval setting, then I’m a Bavarian count!

Don’t forget the trip the French took for a couple years to a distant planet, then grabbing a crystal to power their guillotines.

Ah medieval nobles known for their courtships never leaving their courts.

Question 1, can we get to Eastern Kingdoms by going through Kalimdor?

No, but at least there’s kodos.

Question 2 steal the spice trade

that wasn’t a question but Kul Tiras did it anyway

I was personally present during the 100 years war between the alien space goats and demons in the Epsilon Eridani star system on our way to Earth, before we crashed into Tunguska centuries later…

So Medieval.

As medieval as the presence of homophobia in wow lore…

I don’t actually see that post by Steve Danuser as actually saying homophobia doesn’t and cannot exist in Azeroth, just that Azeroth has the same inclusiveness and diversity of the real world, and a broad number of perspectives on matters such as these things to go with it. Is there good reason for it to exist? No, but there aren’t any good reasons for it to exist in real life either but it still does.

Personally I’m not opposed to characters in RP having horrible views ICly so long as it isn’t solely because of and justified by their views OoCly, just like I’m not opposed to any other fictional characters in media holding disgusting beliefs, so long as it is handled well and respectfully and isn’t just one dimensional. If I find the way they play their character disagreeable, I don’t have to interact with them, or I can choose to oppose their beliefs and call them out on it.

That said, I’ve rarely witnessed homophobia in RP, and when I have I’ve apparently been fortunate in that it has been handled reasonably well and no one involved(including the character on the receiving end) took any offense to the way it was dealt with ICly. Not to say badly handled and deplorable examples of it don’t exist, or happens so infrequently that it doesn’t matter, it matters regardless of frequency. Role-play gives us a chance to explore experiences and views that are not always our own and can be used to give us insight into different walks of life. I mean, WoW isn’t short of xenophobic and racist characters due to the narrative, but role-playing characters holding those beliefs doesn’t make it true of the mun behind the character. To rule certain themes such as this out completely due to the bad examples and those who would use it purely for shock value in RP seems a little dramatic to me.

All that said; when it comes to these themes, I advise a lot of caution and that it should probably be played out with a smaller if not private group due to their nature. For some people these themes may touch a little too close to home. But do I think covering such things is inherently bad? No. That’s just my own personal thoughts on the matter though.

While I understand his intent, it’s unfortunate phrasing, because our real world is NOT GOOD (big letters for emphasis) at inclusiveness.

The intent as I see it is just in response to those throwing hate towards the inclusion of gay and trans characters, and rightfully so.

But yes, the real world is not great at inclusion and open-mindedness, especially in more recent times where it seems we’re growing more and more intolerant, even to the slightest of disagreements.
