Like a certain undead cowboy from a certain guild.
At this point the threadâs gotten fairly lengthy, so some of the previous rebuttals made to this may have become somewhat difficult to locate amongst all the posts, but I stated in the past that I also feel as if roleplaying out characters who seek to harm or kill themselves is often a poor idea, as well as roleplaying out IRL racist ideals, and, given the topic of the thread, homophobia as well.
Gender-based discrimination I also think is unbefitting of Warcraftâs setting and also often paints the person engaging in such roleplay in a negative light and not just the character.
That being said, differences of in-game religious ideals, class/wealth, race (species, not race in the same way it manifests IRL), differences that arises between nations, and differences of morality overall are all completely valid things to roleplay out that I highly doubt anybody would sincerely raise a finger to - and each of them can be explored in length at a number of different angles.
Yee haw!
Hey Augustforge, Iâm a trans woman. Can you say something similarly hilarious about me and my sortâs particular brand of âdegeneracyâ?
angry and bald
The belief itself, youâll find no argument from me there. My only disagreement is that it cannot and shouldnât ever be covered in Role-play.
Like I stated elsewhere, thus why I stated I think some topics are better suited to smaller or private Role-play.
I am actually in complete agreement with you here, the keywords being âoften a bad ideaâ, I donât doubt that most people who incorporate these beliefs into their characters are doing it for terrible reasons, to garner RP by offending and provoking people, and is most definitely not something I would cover myself, especially not in a public RP.
The main RP I refer to as experiencing myself that included themes of homophobia served to develop a friends character, it wasnât someone going out there calling him slurs, it was the character dealing with what those around him expected of him and eventually overcoming the pressures he felt were being forced upon him from all around and eventually finding happiness. Did it cover the topic, yes? Was it the most extreme depictions of homophobia, no. I would argue that in this case it covered the topic without even breaking the ToS, but in any case it was a private role-play among a few guildies.
This is why I donât think certain topics need always be shyed away from and can be played out for overall positive than the negativity associated with the topic at hand.
GâWAN JOE!
weâre too late
the entire dwarven populace must be purged
This statement worries me⌠A lot.
Would you rather he talked to half a girl instead of a whole one?
he said one whole girl, which means he maybe also talked to half a girl⌠In which I am starting to worry there.
What if your character got set aside by their partner for a same-gender relationship? Maybe they start crazily hating them due to a personal bad experience- Because thatâs exactly what happens IRL too, whether itâs to do with sexism or racism or anything else. Or it might just be nothing but just prejudice rooted in biological xenophobia.
People have gone mad for far smaller things.
people waged war over a bucket.
This is something Iâve adressed before too, albeit not as specific. Characters who put stock into bloodlines, or have characters around them who put stock in bloodlines and thus put pressure onto a character like that, is an example of how it can be covered, and I think if youâd brought up this point earlier it mightâve been somewhat of a better look.
I think that sort of roleplay can be alright, seeing some sort of âbigger pictureâ. For me, when Iâve roleplayed Obahar as being very duty-bound and family focused with his views towards the upper class, Iâve always emphasized that he doesnât inherently dislike same-sex couples, but he has this mentality and expectation that being in the upper class requires selflessness, to where you donât always marry who you love, but marryfor the benefit of your house(s).
I think weâre ultimately on the same page on this matter, because I was operating under the assumption that you were okay with people roleplaying disdain towards same-sex couples.
Iâd argue murder is worse but we still allow that in RP, even though threats of violence are against the ToS. Basically I think those are bad arguments against homophobic characters.
The better case, I think, is that homophobia (see also: racism against âethnicâ characters, hate for trans characters etc) isnât somehow uniquely bad, but rather is bringing real-world bigotry into the escapist fantasy world where a lot of people specifically go to avoid it.
Itâs hard to argue that someone Roleplaying in World of WarCraft has any right to complain about threats of violence in roleplay as being âagainst the ToSâ, but itâs a lot more reasonable to have an expectation that gay-bashing or racial slurs arenât acceptable, even in-character.

Well, I was non-specific in how I think the topic can be covered, just that I think it can if handled well. Some are perhaps taking it that I mean grand villains of campaigns and characters who are going around shouting homophobic slurs, which I didnât say. Just that I donât think covering the topic is inherently bad, which some here seem to be arguing for, or at least are making it sound as such.
Iâd argue murder is worse but we still allow that in RP
And that is also something we do ingame, even quests. Again, it is show ingame, the lore has people dying etc.
Itâs part of the world. So I donât think that argument exactly works.
Damn it feels good to be White, Heterosexual, Patriot, Father of 1, soon 2 White children, and to earn 55k euro per year.
Who asked ?

It canât feel that good if youâre choosing to spend that time as a well-off parental figure trying to lessen the experiences of people just living their lives comfortably.
Emphasis on trying. Trying very, very hard.
you didnât get back to me about the handholding pls respond

A ToS breach in front of a limited audience is a ToS breach all the same. Best not do it at all, at least not in WoW.
