Good enough for me
I would argue homosexual relationships arenât ever focused on in the game. Itâd be like saying bathrooms donât exist in movies because a character never uses one, somethings are left out because they arenât important to the story. Not saying homophobia necessarily does exist within setting, but I think it can be easily argued that there might be a fringe minority that does hold such views.
As for matter of âbeing interestingâ clearly for the person playing the character it is interesting, and that is the only person for whom it has to be. Other players then have the freedom not to engage with that player if they donât find their character / ideas interesting.
That doesnât seem like a good argument. By nature, prejudice is supposed to be mostly unjustified. Thatâs half the point of the flaw.
Hyped for the blood elf exiles of Homophobeâdorei that are banished from Silvermoon and form a new race and identity.
This is very likely to happen, so whoever does this I hope will not mind being excluded on those grounds
I guess it can be argued, sure. But for me, it comes down to the following:
Just because we can, it doesnât mean that we should.
Lorâthemar would 100% exile homophobes tbh.
and so would King Kael.
Actually that is a misconception. People do not just âhaveâ prejudices, they always have reasons (as twisted as they might be) for said bigotry.
Gonna have to be the contrarian here and say I disagree- Though perhaps not in the way the OP gives examples as.
I think all kinds of prejudice, phobias and/or rational/irrational hate are alright in the game- Given that they are played out tastefully.
Probably yelling out /y slurs about âthose god damn (insert person of x sexual orientation here) need to get lined up and flayedâ is quite past what is appropriate- Or even fitting for the game.
But, unpopular as they are, controversial/bigoted views do exist in WoW- Sexism is probably the most infamous example, and I do not believe at all that these kinds of irrational or prejudices/bias can also extend to same gender or other oriented characters in the game.
Atahalni for example despises all kind of norm-breakers when it comes to courting or forming a relationship with someone (which is a bit ironic since he all but fits the norm as a tauren), simply because he has a very nihilistic view on relationships and believes that only the utility aspect of it (e.g. procreation) is useful- Anything else, like love and affection, while understandable, are frankly a waste of time- Moreso if your passions donât even produce anything tangible and productive.
Shen, my pandaren, doesnât think half as deep into it like that- He just thinks that people have a duty to their family to keep the family line going, but also if someone rebels heâs okay with that- He just finds them weird, because itâs unusual for him, and that is why he is cautious.
I can also see characters who have had bad experiences with the said people having negative views on them. All of these options seem reasonable to me.
I think itâs very important to think about: Does it add anything at all postive to the roleplay scene?
I only see it adding a bunch of negatives, and as Perroy said earlier, thereâs loads of diffrent ways to make a character flawed or start a beef that wonât do this.
Yeah Iâve actually lost count of how many times I was told at university âI assumed you were gayâ based upon stuff like me liking to cook (?) Being verbally articulate (?) And finding most beers taste like urine. Ironically it was usually from women who bemoaned that men they were interested in never shared their interests.
I dunno maybe something to do with the fact you stereotype those who do as gay?
My best mate and flatmate for 2 years thereafter was pretty much a poster boy for macho behaviour and he to date is the most comfortable gay man I know. Our world is full of variety and people should just let it be or better still love it wholeheartedly.
It never occurred to me that this might actually be a thing, but it is shameful to think that it is.
For the most part I think it is just people assuming that real life prejudices and real life morality would be entirely transferable into the role-playing scene.
Given that, to the best of my knowledge, there is no basis for anti-LGBT stuff in WoWâs lore at all, it seems strange to do so. I canât think of a single in game religion, government, moral code or lore character/race that has anything negative to say about LGBT folks so to import it into the game is at best lazy and at worst down right nasty.
be like the men of the illiad and monologue for three pages about how your soul weeps to see the heart of a man you love consumed by such lust for blood and darkness
then do filthy things to him because topping = masculinity, not gay to top fellas
Keep IC and OOC separate! Unnecessary thread!
Mirroring real world racism/homophia is exactly the same as mirroring real world insults/vulgarity(F words in RP). Itâs not only cringe and lazy in its own right but also obviously embarassing and tasteless.
I always thought itâs always impressive when people play their âracistâ IC chars to racist projections seen in NPCs throughout the game itself(Orcs making fun of weak-arms elves etc etc).
Maybe read the thread before hopping in with contrarian hot takes?
We did it guys, the level 10 forum alt ended homophobia.
This is basically the be all end all of this debate. As long as you do it tastefully and reasonably it is not really an issue.
Truer words were never spoken
In my case, despite the fact that I routinely dated girls in school (and had never expressed the interest I also had in men), they preferred to focus on the openly affectionate (and entirely platonic) friendship that I had with another guy.
I tend to find that these exact same thought-patterns apply to the angry homophobes in roleplay. Nothing moderately feminine can be permitted.
I read and responded to the OP! If you donât like my opinion thatâs fine but itâs what I think!
None of them involve needing to resort to slurs, and I think thatâs the crux. So long as itâs done with justifications that are beyond âI donât like two men kissingâ, and doesnât act to impede upon someoneâs character to seem lesser, it could be done. But I would still find the userâs motivationâs questionable; same that r*pe could happen in an RP narrative, but why in the ever-living f**k would you want to?
At the end of it all, we as players have full control over our characters. Their flaws and prejudices are conscious decisions we attribute to them.
