A character flaw.
I think it enhances the idea that my pandaren is a bigot and not very deep-thinking. He for example doesnât find it conflicting at all that heâs literally serving Sylvanas Loyalists and void worshippers, while at the same time revering his ancestors and celestials.
Peeps often use âIts ICâ or âIts what my character would doâ to excuse a lot of stuff that doesnât fly.
RP is acting in a way, except well its improv, there is no script to follow, no one forces your âcharacterâ to do anything other than you the writer for that character.
And if you have several characters that all have the same âflawâ then sheesh maybe their writer needs to evaluate where âthatâ is coming from.
There are far more compelling flaws to give a character than homophobia.
Yeah, that sums up my view on it.
But you already do that well, with;
Is that not enough? We know Garrosh (or say Garithos) was a bigot without him hating on an oppressed irl demographic.
I think with this kind of thing, where we havenât actually had any showcase of any character in any Warcraft setting dissaproving of same-sex couples, the person needs to ask if they -really- want to be the first example/iniator for homophobia in the setting?
Maybe you just want to RP a bad person! Plenty of people do! Your choice how you want to go about it!
Why do people want to RP thieves and bandits! Why do people want to RP fanatics and zealots! Evil is evil!
Again, you could argue a particular concept goes against the setting / the ToS, and that would be a fair argument! Besides that, I donât really see a reason to argue against it! Most of the time, if you donât like the concept of an RPer, avoid it!
I think thatâs more Blizzard being careful than a lore thing. We see two elves flirting and I believe that and another example perhaps are all we see of LGBT in WoW?
Yeah, but itâs still more than absolutley nothing of the opposite. Meaning that whoever then decides to roleplay that essentially wants to be the first example of it.
Which is a bit
Perhaps, but the person actually playing the character might disagree with that. They might find that kind of character very compelling or that flaw a really interesting flaw to explore and deconstruct. From the point one starts saying âbut it isnât interestingâ or âit isnât as good asâ, it begs the question âwhat makes you think others view those writing elements in the same way you do?â.
Yeah I think it adds another layer of ânorfnessâ to his character.
I mean, you could say this for literally any trait: How violent your character is, how smart they are, how intrusive and/or industrious they are, etc. You could set a standard for all of them for the sake of conforming to the standards of some people who find it uncomfortable.
I donât think itâs an issue.
Personally Iâd think homophobia etc exists to some extent but we will never see it 'cause Blizzard are clever enough not to place it in WoW or the lore. Like a previous example of two parents wanting their kid to carry on the bloodline of a race affected by war and death and all that.
I know for a fact one of my characters (who is an OC rather than RP char) would be homophobic. Even so, if I did make him an RP char again, I wouldnât RP it out >_>
Sure, but thatâs just an example of someone bringing OOC into IC! The mark of a bad RPer! Which is actually the same mistake that Iâm trying to argue against in this thread!
Complete sidenote, but I canât help noticing your! amount of! exclamation! points!
For the moment regarding sexuality, we got a complied list here(Nicely seperating ingame and RPG stuff)
Plenty of homosexuality hints, and later straight up things, including an established in-lore popular book series that has quite alot of homosexuallity showcased.
No trace, not even the vaugest hint however at any dissaprovings of it.
Wouldnât it have to be a very, very new thing?
I mean religion wise there is none of that âsinners go to hell stuffâ that marred various regions and set their laws about such acts.
In fact rather the opposite, the Church taking a very âlive and let liveâ, âbe excellent to eachotherâ approach to life.
So if we go with the idea of âits because of the world ending wars and eventsââŚ
Itâs new, its what two generations for Humans and 0 generations for the longer lived races, compared to the millenia in the real world.
Which I do think is Blizzard knowing very well hell would be risen should they show any sign of disapproving, for obvious reasons.
Donât get me wrong, I hate homophobia, transphobia, any phobia against LGBT+ and all that but I donât think it would be 100% absent from such a huge world with varying races and characters. Just that Blizz will never include it.
They show it in a negative light they get lambasted in the west.
They show it in a positive light, they lose access to China.
But even if it exists, it seems completly pointless to RP it out as a deliberate choice. It adds nothing except that it makes people upset or annoyed OOC.
Pretty much. They have to be extremely careful what they do include in their world to try and appease to the masses.
Yea, I agree more with that than the opposition if Iâm honest. I wouldnât ever touch it with a ten ft pole myself but I do get the whole IC =/= OOC thing and that some people are just homophobic. But it can be best to keep it to ones RP circle of people who wonât be affected. For all we know people could be struggling with their own LGBT issues and it could hit hard.
Itâs the same on Tumblr actually. Nobody actually RPs out homophobia, more imply it in their charâs history from parental figures and whatnot and I think thatâs the best way to go - Not to RP it. But then again on Tumblr you can just unfollow people you donât want to see RPing whereas on WoW youâd still see the personâs avatar and whatnot.
and now i go stuff my face with ripoff KFC.
