I cannot roll on the gear I want for transmog because I have better gear equipped. How can I get this (insane looking, props to the design team, wow) awesome gear from LFR? Should I void storage and pray to the group loot gods? Does that even work?

Either go on an alt or get lucky with a transmog roll. Unlikely early on.

Tbh I never won a transmog roll in LFR ever last season. Always someone who can need roll it.
It is an annoying gap in the gear chain for sure.

Transmog rolls should be equal to NEED rolls.
I find the rolling system very flawed in many ways. I think LFR atleast should have personal loot

Anything save for guild runs should have personal.
Seen instances now where the loot is 4 warblades (from reddit)… Without any DH.
Also safe to assume the loot roller is bugged resulting in the same seed being used to multiple rolls. Seeing just how often not one or two duplicates happen but 4/5 of the loot being one item. And been like this for years.

go play with lower level alt
People usually roll need for transmog. I never did that, but many people do. You can easily check their gear and see that they roll for a worse gear

Make an alt for LFR. One of my friends who mains a paladin has made a second one that will stay at (relatively) low gear just so he can roll need in LFR.

I think I have probably had more luck when I’m in the mass farm on alts stage to get the transmogs because I can need but I win so few rolls it’s frustrating with GL.

Honestly, I think once the item drops, one player gets the item and everyone else, that can use that item, should get the Transmog.
There’s just so much to do in this game, like grinding reputations to unlock other Transmoggs as well, that Blizzard could give this one for free.
For example, in a imaginary scenario I magically managed to get all the LFR Transmoggs, I would still have normal mode, heroic mode, Mithic mode to farm 
Edit: another idea if Blizzard really want people to come back for Transmoggs would be, to add some really cool looking pieces, with a rare chance to drop.
But when the item drops, everyone gets the appearance. That would eliminate the sense of frustration, to see others needing on something because of Transmog reasons, while keeping people chasing after the appearance.

Should LFR be in the gear chain? Maybe it should be purely transmog items. What item level does it drop anyhow?
I might do LFR once to see the story and finish the quests but I won’t do it regularly. I won’t be there for gear, I’ll be fine with the 441+ items from Emerald Dream.

Group Loot should never, NEVER, have been brought into LFR, but then again, apart from giving LFR some of the better colour tints, Blizzard despises LFR and the people who use it more than your average Heroic Harry does and if certain people got their way both players and in Blizzard, LFR would be gone next patch.
And so would I.
Which to be fair everyone would probably be happy to see.
Yeah, I think any Random Match Making system should have Personal Loot.
LFG should have options to choose which loot system the group will have, which should be visible to applicants and non-changable so people can’t apply to a Personal Loot group and then find themselves in a Group Loot system.

My solution has been to level multiple of the class (or alternative classes) who can roll on the items I want. And make sure not to gear them up more than needed to do the LFR you want.
It’s generally quite crap, as you limit your game, and the rest of the fellow LFRaiders “suffer” from you being less geared than you have to / could have been.
In Shadowlands I had no less than 6 of my main class in the end, just so I could finally loot the last 2 pieces for my class set. It’s madness, I know. But mains often raid, and as such can’t pick LFR tmogs from the vault.
