Are they a popular choice for tank?
I want to roll one (no pun intended) but don’t want to be the cliche fotm tank roller.
Imo they are the absolute worst.
They don’t avoid damage, they just delay it. Very very low self sustain.
I’d rather choose a normal tank with 50% damage reduction from armor and stuff than a monk that has like 20% reduction and 50% delay.
Tanking leveling dungeons with one is also a horrible experience.
Plz dont listen to the person above. Brewmasters were actually the best tanks in raids in 8.0 and even after the nerfs they will continue to be good.
Stagger is actually the strongest mitigation and brews are probably the easiest to heal from a healing perspective.
Yes i heard they are a bit harder while leveling but that stopping you from actually playing one in endgame content is ridiculous.
I wouldnt say they are that popular in general but i actually have no idea.
Ok so this is what brewmasters are:
Strongest tanks agains physical damage
Able to survive huge hits just because of stagger
Good use of ironskin brew(100% uptime when tanking) and purifying the stagger at the right time is the difference between a bad and a good brewmaster.
They dont have much selfhealing, they are reliant on a healer in dungeons and raids.
But they are really good tanks.
Actually warriors have that title now but brew is nevertheless extremely good against physical damage, especially if it’s heavy hitting autos where our mastery gets to shine.
But yeah, the fact that a brew should never get 1shot, and its damage taken being smooth makes it usually a healer’s favorite tank to heal.
It feels a bit strange at first when you heal a brewmaster. But when you get used to it it’s really nice. They never go 100 to 0 just because they missed to press shield of the righteous or something. Spiky damage is way harder to heal compared to the smooth damage on brewmasters.
I don’t main Brewmaster but just to echo what a previous poster said, don’t judge them in the early levels. This may have changed with the BFA prepatch squish but if it’s similar to how it was at least, it was level 80 I think when they became viable again, the experience tanking the Wotlk dungeons and tanking the MoP ones is like night and day.
I can’t talk about 8.1 specifically but they were great in 8.0 and a lot of fun to play. If you like the idea of being a drunken tank drinking “brews” in order to mitigate damage, it’s a no brainer, you’ll have a blast. Also Monks seemingly immune to being fotm, even if they are top tier, they’re just not as popular as a lot of classes or at least from my experience.
