How are warrior tank ssuppose to keep agro in dungeons and raids?

Ive been tanking raid and dungeons with my warrior and threat is such a annoying problem i have to spam taunt in dungs if i don’t have a shaman that gives me alpha and in raids literaly any other tank rips threat constantly.

devastate dmg is a joke, this is one of the reasons, it should be reworked into weapon dmg in phase 2 already

also hunters are doing insane amount of aoe along with ele shamans, you just can’t compete in threat metters against

Without alpha and wf warrior tank is a joke

Deep prot, shield slam stack defense and hope that you dont miss shield slam ever.

Yup, AoE Threat is a joke.

The devs on twitter have terrible takes on Warrior and Rogue tanking. Statements like “Communication is what classic is all about, tell you team to wait for 2/3 Fan of Knifes before they attack” and stuff like that.

They ignore the fact Paladin and Bear Tanks don’t need to do this which makes Warriors and Rogues just a bad choice + I open with Thunderclap, Shockwave, Thunderclap before my group starts attack in AoE fights and lose aggro the moment they attack. I will be luck to hold aggro on one target if I get off a Shield Slam fast enough without missing.

I know for Rogues they basically said, “Screw you, your tier 1 set bonus will help, that’s all you get”. I feel like warrior is getting the same treatment but I don’t think Warrior tier 1 for tanks will be good enough when you factor in all the DPS getting more damage as well.

For single target you might be okay in raids if you don’t get dodge parried too much, pretty RNG if you hold aggro or not really. But again, the devs hate warriors and people that play them, literally a bunch of classic andys crying over warriors being too powerful in vanilla.

Anyway yeah, just look at Zirene’s comments about Rogue and Warrior tanks on his twitter, you will leave with a migraine. His idea of game design is just “I think my ideas are good, if the community are not having fun they just means their stupid”.

With alpha they never drop aggro is my experience, and as a shaman my burst is pretty high

AoE is rubbish, hunter explosive trap takes aggro even with a 3 second wait before dps start attacking.

On Single Target our threat is strong enough, but we rely on Shield slam for 90% of our threat and I’ve had DPS die in DG just because I got Dodge and Parried 3/4 Shield Slams in a row. Idk how dodge and parry is calculated vs Hit Chance but I currently have a +9 hit bonus so I if I am still get screwed that like that at this point then our Aggro will be RNG even in Nax.

Devastate damage as deep prot is too bad to maintain aggro alone, revenge is only good for procing free casts of Shield Slam. Dodge, dodge, parry, parry parry, 2 dps and a healer are dead.

Whats your weapon skill with the weapon you are using?, if its with +5 you can not get anything out of having more than 6% (to be more exact 6,something stupid so 7% if you want to be completely safe), but hit will not do anything when it comes to dodges or parries.

Yeah I know how the hit cap works, I just happen to have a load of hit gear as I am Fury but go prot for dungeons (Lionheart Helm, truestrike shoulders etc).

But yeah I didn’t know if anything could effect the Dodge Parry chance. But warriors get so much threat from shield slam that with a bit of bad rng you generate close to no threat.

Of course the reason for that is prot warriors damage is the lowest out of pretty much any class at this point. I’ve been how damaged by healers + we can;t use thunderclap in defensive stance so AoE threat requires you to rage dump etc. Overall it is terrible.

Use the thunder clap rune, its worth it when tanking I wouldnt go into a dungeon without it.

I am using the thunderclap rune. Does not allow you to use it in defensive stance though.

I open every fight with charge → thunderclap → Shockwave → Shield Slam → Thunderclap, then a hunter pops explosive trap and gets 2/3 times the aggro generation. If I Hit my shield slam I might keep aggro on that one if I am lucky.

Are there differwnt thunderclap runes? Anyway, he is talking about the one that let you use it in defensive stance

Really?

Wait what, did they change that at some point recently? I can see you are right but that was not the case before?

Was always usable in def stance

As a shaman i do one flameshock on 5 targets with self alpha. After that no1 even comes close to taking my threat even if i go afk to get a glass of water. The lightning shield aoe from overcharged passivley keeps my threat top. Not every class can be a hero class

Just as you said i didnt had a single warrior tank for full phase 4.
But as a Hunter with massive aoe dmg 2-2,5k dps.
I always do this on the most tanks, run to them and place down the frost trap this helps a lot when mops get aggroed.
The time i need running forth and back is enough to not aggro when i start bursting.
Exception is Rogue tank it works but i need to do some Feign Deaths^^

Threat is fine with alpha if you read your runes and use thunderclap in defensive stance like you always could since that rune was added.

However, without spirit of the alpha every fight is a clown fiesta and you don’t stand a chance. Plus the problem mentioned above about your shield slam getting parried, especially since you don’t get the def->ap conversion on a parry/dodge/miss means you can get unlucky and simply have no chance to keep aggro. Especially on onyxia who is taunt immune for some reason.

Idk why they made +45% threat reliant on having a specific class in your party. Not a big deal for raids since you can count on having a shaman, but especially for dungeons it’s really frustrating how stark the difference is with and without a shaman in your party.

Just don’t lock 45% threat behind a buff. Redesign alpha and give us and other tanks the 45% threat at a baseline.

had some experience with warrior tanks in raids.

besides myself (a shammy tank) there are 2-3 warriors in my raid who tanks alongside me.

they are constantly complaining about threat issues even with spirit of the alpha on them, windfury and everything else we as a raid can do to support them.

likewise, dps are complaining that they find themselves holding back on threat (and thus dps), which we can all agree is a big issue.

as far as we are concerned the tanks aren’t doing anything wrong.
they are doing what blizzard intend warriors tanks to be doing.

the problem is that the threat (thunder clap in particular) simply isn’t outputting enough threat, and even the single target threat seems to be lackluster.

they taunt, they spam devastate, they shield slam, they revenge on proc, they have vigilance on high dps pumpers, i think they even make room for the occasional heroic strike/cleave as well, and they got buffs and consumes (but again, so does everyone else) and yet, the threat seems to just not go up very well.

seems blizzard has managed to break the entire class, as tanking is not the only department they seem lackluster in, the same can be said for pvp and pve dps (with a few exceptions under certain circumstances, such as fully consumed/worldbuffed with recklessness popped).

to be honest, i’d like to hear if there’s any actual warriors players around here who are actually (successfully) raid tanking that may have some tips that i could pass along, because my knowledge about warrior tanking is probably lacking when it comes to SOD, which at this point is a completely different game than classic vanilla.

“deals 50% increased threat”

hate to quote asmongold, but 50% of 0 is still 0.

I’ve managed in every situation except onyxia who’s taunt immune for some reason and also drops your aggro a little every time she knocks you back. The abandoned wedding ring helps a lot, I don’t use vigilance because +10% dmg from shield mastery is significantly more threat than vigi will give you.

It’s not easy, you’re never far ahead of the dps in threat unless you get a lucky streak with sword and board triggers or shield slam crits, and you can certainly get unlucky and never stand a chance, but it’s almost never been a problem for me so far in raid.
