How do contested zones work in Normal servers?

I’ve forgotten how PvP/Normal servers work… I made a character on a normal server, and I came across an alliance player and as I hovered over them I got the sword cursor, as if I could attack them… this was in Mulgore, but how would it work in Ashenvale or other contested zones? would I be flagged for PvP?

Normal aka PVE. You can set flag settings and the game will respect this UNLESS you enter Hostile Territory then you will be force flagged PVP.

You’re not flagged.
They are.
You can attack them but they can’t to you (you got iniative)

You’re flagged.
They aren’t.

You’re flagged.
So are they.
Both have the iniative to unleash the third coming of Alliance VS Horde. Just look at his weird grimace as he’s stealing your node… Are you really going to let that stand?

Thanks… isn’t that a bit unbalanced though, one side not flagging having the initiative?

It’s entirely balanced, they know the risks as soon as they flagged themselves that a rogue who was drinking Thistle Tea saw that a death flag went up and then cast “Premeditation” whilst applying poisons.

And, having iniative doesn’t mean you will win. It does mean you can get the upper hand though…

Maybe explain this: Hostile Area is inside Orgrimmar and Undercity.

The rest is contested. In contested area you are NOT autoflagged.

Logically, it means that everywhere you are supposed to quest on normal servers, you will NOT be flagged unless you chose to do so, or attack PVP flagged players, OR town guards.

Furthermore, but I am not entirely sure of this anymore as its been a while, I think that even NOT when entering the Barrens, or Mulgore, you are auto PVP flagged. But in Orgrimmar you are.

In short: any place youre supposed to end up, you are not flagged, on normal PVE servers.
