so im very new to the game and i hit 50 a couple days ago and done the scourge event thing and got all my gear 100-110 and also killed that world boss for the 115 bow but im not sure how to get gear now ive tried to do lfr raids but all i get are these gem things and the gear i see people getting are a huge downgrade ive also tried some dungeons but still no upgrades im not sure how to get better gear. if someone could tell me id appreciate it.

Wait for Shadowlands. That’s the most efficient way to gear further.

What you have will be good enough to start off SL which is where you’ll get better gear. Doing high mythic keys would also likely get you an upgrade but this close to SL release you’ll find it hard to get a group for them.
New expansion launches in 3 days, don’t bother getting gear at all.
Explore the game a bit, do some professions etc.

As of right now the gear at ice crown is called “catch up gear” meaning its a easy source for new players and returning players to be at a decent level to prepare for the next expansion which will be released in just a few days. Right now you don’t need to worry til then. Once you hit level 60 in shadowlands it will be a case of doing dungeons and gearing through them, the higher the difficulty the better gear you will gain. You want to aim to get to mythic dungeon level gear. Then once you are done with that you can choose if you want to do mythic+ dungeons which are timed dungeons with extra mechanics to the dungeon. You can increase the level of the gear by doing higher level mythic+ runs. To increase the level of the key to do a higher level mythic + you need to do the dungeon in the time. This sounds daunting for new players but just take it slow and only do it if you feel you are ready to try the next level of difficulty.
Once the new raid is out you will be able to do normal at first then like the dungeons you can progress on to the 2 other higher difficulties which is heroic and mythic. There is no mythic + for raids. And raid finder won’t come out for the new raid until some time later and the gear will be of weaker level the normal mode of the raid.
Raiding and mythic + dungeons will be the top of the range gear you can get! I hope this helps.

I suggest to Explorer the game a little like said earlier. Get yourself mining and herbing professions and farm farm farm the content until sl hits. I am sure you will be able to sell the stuff on the auctionhouse to make some gold now or later. Or use this couple of days to learn more about the game. I believe blizzard has a guide for newcomers, search for it. Bove all, enjoy And Dont stress about gear yet!
Go to icecrown do the dailies and kill the bosses turn in stones for the gear set of ilvl 100 gear hope to get rings to drop of the bosses, do the story to start the cape quest so your neck become ilvl 100ish and then you’re set 
To get the best ilvl stuff you need to : mythic raids,dungeons+15+,rated pvp with high rating.
