Whenever I open a stream, it appears they have multiple different bars all over the screen. The most useful or interesting one for me would be the DPS counter. My question is, how do I get one and if it’s an additional software - which one is accepted by Blizzard?

They’re using an addon to do that, most players use the addon called Details for this.
There are a few add-ons your can choose.
Most use details.
Some use recount.
A few use others.
Is Details allowed by Blizzard? I don’t want to get in trouble for using an addon. 
Yes its allowed.
Blizzard allows addons, they don’t allow bots or anything that automates keystrokes.
Yes, add-ons are perfectly fine.
Your can get most of them at curse forge. they also have an installer.

Surprised no-one has said “you can see mine by scrolling to the top” /flex
useing DPS addons is bad it makes players more toxic and cursing dramas and it super annoying when some DPS w**** linking dps afther every trash pull still in a normal dungon then u inspect him he is some 290+ ilvl warrior 
Recount is not that accurate.
Details! Are the go to addon.
OP using DPS addon or not won’t stop others from doing so. Using it is a step toward self improvement in the first place.

Just always thought it’d be interesting to see how much DPS I do in comparison to others, and I love to set new records for myself
Hydaelyn is the world where FFXIV is set.
FFXIV is known for its “don’t talk about DPS”-banhammer.
Oh, I haven’t played that. I’ve only previously played GW2 and Tibia (the latter for many years starting before WoW!)
And that, ladies/gentlemen/preferred pronoun is the way to treat dps meters, not as a huge D waving contest.
On topic, i use Details as recount isnt really accurate and Skada seems to have fallen off a cliff
