I purchased the upgrade which came with a character boost to 110 which I used thinking that then I could explore all of WoW without restrictions..I could go anywhere, ride and fly etc and I thought I'd land myself back at the Night Elf starting area only to find I can't get there! What do I do now?

The starting area has been destroyed to get there you need to travel to dark shore and talk to the mage there she will send you back to a different phase so you can then fly over.

there'll be a speech bubble on your map near the north part of darkshore i think thats where the NPC is to change it back
She should appear on your map as like a text bubble which says Zidormi on it.

She's not a mage, she's a bronze dragon in human form. Bronze dragons guard time so they are used to allow you to past version of a zone via time travel.

She's using Hermione's trick, it's easy to manage time when you actually control it with time travel.
