How do i sim my tank?

Hello.
So i decided to become a tank for season 3, and every “guide” tells me to Sim my character.
When i was a DPS i used to SIM my character to get the Stat Weights, to put them into this addon called Pawn.
Anyway…how can i do something like that for a tank?

You cant really sim survivability if that is what you are asking.

So then i should sim damage instead of survivability?
But then the question would follow: should a tank focus on damage or survivability?

Just focus on ilvl at the start of the season. Stamina is important as it lets you survive more stuff, and that’s the most important thing.

Learning dungeon routes, trash and boss mechanics, how to hold aggro, how to deal with annoying caster mobs and affixes, getting the core rotation and utility key-binds programmed into your muscle memory, etc. is way, way, way more important than optimizing secondary stats.

I like having 1 defensive on-use trinket on my tanks as I’m still learning stuff. Surviving is more important than DPS at the start of a season when there’s so much stuff to learn. Once everything starts feeling easier, I’d go for more damage-focused trinkets and talent builds.

Tank sims are for damage purposes. Mostly you are using only stat weights as your trinkets will be defensive and your consumables should be stamina.

From min maxing point of view, being a tank with good damage is always a plus since you help your team clear content faster (even if it is by tiny bit). However your priority is to know tank mechanics and to survive first, dealing damage second.

It is pretty simple: Damage is the most important thing as long you are able to survive

That being said: Most tanks have their best scalings on their mainstat + you need the stamina to tank big hits, thats why on each start of a new patch you go for biggest Item-lvl.

If you have items with the same ilvl you go for your best stats (Look up a guide), you mostlikely get a choice between DPS and Defense oriented stats. If you are not experienced enough, go for the defensive build first, once you know what you are doing you go for more and more offense.

TBH it highly depends on what kind of content you do, M+ or Raiding are extremely different. In M+ you should focus on learning mechanics, routes and limits. OVer the time you can shift or rethink your methods. For example: If I go more defensive can I pull additional packs, or am I limited to a fixed sizes which allows me to go for more dmg? (The size of your pulls are also extremely influenced by the controll your group has over the trash)

TLDR: Go for survivalbility till you know what you are doing than focus on dmg.

I recommend starting with defensive secondary stats and one trinket being a defensive one until you get comfortable with how your spec works. Generally Versatility is always a good middle ground because it increases both your offensive and defensive power, though I am not sure the same applies for Guardian. Mastery may be a better defensive stat for you. Wowhead and icyveins both should have a general stat recommendation you can use.

The goal is to find a healthy balance. If you get to a point where you do not have to use defensivesat all, beside active mitigation, is the time when you can consider shifting some of your defensive power to offense instead.

In raids this is easier to determine, because you have a partner to rely on. Damage patterns are well telegraphed so your defensive toolkit is generally enough to handle it, so you can afford to shift your stats to offense.

Practise makes perfect in the end. Get used to the pulls, your spec, and the damage patterns first.

If you die is not a matter of secondary stat distribution probably 99,99% of the time.

If you die you or someone in you group made a mistake.

If you need defensive options you find em on trinkets or in your talents.

There is tanking dummy in Valdrakken.

As many people have already mentioned, your primary job is to live. If you manage that, any additonal damage is a plus, especially when pushing stuff on a timer like M+, but worry about that aspect later.

Go for stat weights initially, most of your trinkets will be defensive ones to help you fulfill your primary job of surviving. Once you get a bit more used to it or better geared, you can supplement your defensive trinkets with more offensive on-use damage ones.

It’s the same for a healer, primary job is keeping group alive, after that, any additional damage on boss is a nice bonus. Often times, the real difference between a good tank and a great tank will be their ability to deal damage while surviving, which is where damage sims can be helpful.

But in the beginning, you should focus mainly on understanding your rotation and your CD usage.
