How do warlocks fare in open world PvE content?

I’ve been wanting to play a class with a lot of oomph and Destro lock came to mind. My hunter, while fun, simply doesn’t have that feeling of overpowering might other classes would offer lorewise. It basically came down between three classes - Warlock, Shaman and a Mage. Shaman was quickly discarded due to the fact that I absolutely abhor what they did to Totem system and I need help to decide between mages and warlocks. While I know mages inside and out, I never played warlock for the life of me so I’ve wondered how are they in open world content - Do they have QoL abilities and do they have the boom feeling I’m looking for?

I’d vote for destro lock over mage.

One warlocks are just cooler they look cooler and just feel more impactful, two they have better spell animations ( especially destro and green fire) and three chaos bolts just look amazing and seeing big crits give me a chubby.

Demo lock can do pretty much any open world content solo, you can for example solo the world bosses in nazjatar (wekemara) with semi decent gear. And doing your best to summon a beefy tyrant (600%+) that either crits for 250k or hits for 125k every cast is quite rewarding.

go play mage

Most definitely. I prefer destro most of the time but I roll affliction for PvP. You can have that “boom” feeling with cataclysm to blast aoe adds into oblivion and Bane of Havoc with double Chaos bolts is really cool. Of course, you have to gear properly for maximum effect.

What kind of QoL abilities are you looking for? I can tell you that burning rush is quite fine to speed up yourself at cost of health but you have drain life to compensate. You also have Voidwalker to tank everything for you and other pets to fit the spec.

Imp can heal you as well.
Fel-hunter has silence and dispel enemy target.
Succubus has seduce which crowd controls target in place.

You also have Infernal as destruction, which blasts a meteor from the sky and stuns target in AoE zone. Does massive dps and fills your shards.

They are just marvelous. And this is mainly destro I am talking about.

Warlocks are the kings of solo content.

We have good, fun damage with that BOOM feeling you want. I am surprised when world elites are able to survive my burst opener (even ones that, at the start of the xpac, were meant for 5-10 people like the big wiggly worm in Nazmir).

We also have a lot of toys and utility.

If you die as a warlock in world content you’re doing it wrong- between big blue boy tank, life drain, mortal coil, demon skin… you’re immortal. You take less damage and have more ways to heal it back than a lot of classes, plus a passive +STAM bonus. Go demo and your tankboy gets huge, go affliction with the right azerite traits and your burst damage is poured into life drain and you get to heal your entire bar from 1hp to 100% while doing massive damage.

We also have healthstones, jumpy portals for a bit of utility, and every raid needs at least one of us so that they don’t have to run out to summon new people.

Warlocks are fun.
