How do you choose a name for your character?

On my iPhone, in Notes, I have a list of names saved specifically for when I’m stuck at the character creation screen trying to come up with one.

Godlike, Canabal, GunPowd3r Guru, Cr1tikal, Autopsy, Foresight, Gimmick…

I usually just pick from those, I’m an aggressive type of player and I like my characters’ names to reflect that.

Im on mostly RP realms so I usually check out what NPCs are called and try and go with something that sounds like it will fit in.

I took this name from Emberthal and mixed it with the idea of dragonkin.
It gets harder to come up with names on popular realms though. A couple of months ago I created a Kul Tiran DK on AD called Josephena which I quite like (swapping male/female names can sometimes work well IME).

Usually I pick something that fits with whatever race I’m playing. Do have a few alts with a more pun-like name rather than something their mother would’ve called them though.

I have no clue

I have Maliky as my name… and then some class specific after.
So
Malikypewpew
Malikychi
Malikymage
Malikyboomie
Malikypriest
Malikysmash
Malikyquake
Malikyevo
Malikylock
Malikydh
Malikydk
Maliky (My rogue)

I have a paldin somewhere as well, but the forks knows what that’s called.

Maliky is just something that’s evolved from some silly childhood BS, think it started as Malak, from star wars, and years of changing it slightly turned it into Maliky.

Oh I like my name to be unique on the servers, I don’t like there to be another one, so that’s the first thing I tend to check. Then I look at myths, legends, history, favourite fictions and characters and make a name of several of them, after I have spent a good few hours putting them together in a pleasing fashion.

I actually like to write, to create so this isn’t as horrific as it may sound to some people.
Tynmaerae came from quite a few fairy based names…because, well, you’d have to see me in real life to get that lol…

Even the same care goes into my Hunter pets and I always make sure they have a good, appropriate name.

My husband on the other hand picks what’s funny a Necromancer called DecayNY indeed in Guild Wars both him and my best friend made my lovely named lady hang round with two reprobates called BobSpoons and WildBillBannanas…

My husband is also the reason that my son thinks Flamingo’s are called “Steve” droll look

Do rp guilds care if your name got some â, ç and so on?
Asking because I consider to join a rp server.

It’s a secret.

I’m going to say yes, and purely based on the evidence I see, because when I went to have a look at the Argent Dawn Forums, there are indeed some names with special characters in them!!

It depends. Some guilds are hardcore and a very strict with all aspects of RP such as how to speak, when to use whisper, what to wear and of course character name. Others however are more relaxed and accept that sometimes odd characters are need in names to get it how you want.

Yes.
And so do alot off the regular players.
It’s cringe.
Don’t do it.

I would get inspiration from books and change a few letters around. I wanted to call this char Flash but that was taken so had to add the er to it.

Thanks. I wanted a reference to flash gordon but didnt like the male night elf animations. And here we are today .

Haha, love you do that much for pet names…
Usually my pet names are named after the people i play with… it’s so fun to yell out in the middle of a key “FFS Helen! Why are you dead again” she gets so offended… and then realizes i am talking about the pet xD

Thats sad that you had to go from a hero who saved the universe to a dirty old man in a raincoat!!LOL

My friend used to use a particular name when he plays EQ2.

When he started playing WoW on release he never used it for some reason. I just duplicated the last letter of the name and rolled with that throughout WoW.

Now I just add other letters or words around it for my alts.

I’ve never been into picking fantasy names and stuff like that, I’m pretty lazy, so just re-use one name over and over for the most part.

Yes, that’s what my Husband does
I actually would find that really funny myself…

I think my husband and I have very different mindsets, but I feel you two would get on very well (grins). There is a meme where it shows two apes fighting and one with a comical face and it reads. “Me, about to make a bad situation, even worse” that sums up my husband right there…

Don’t get me wrong, I think he is very amusing and after 22 years together, he’s still my choice for favourite company…

but my smile pastes on a little bit whenever he starts to “pun”

i always try to see how most NPC’s of 1 race are called for my alts, but mostly my character names start with “Gran” (Italian for Great) and then the name of the class:
an example: “GranEvoker” Means “Great Evoker” etc
