How do you choose a name for your character?

I am interested how do you guys come up with a cool name for your character.
I google list of characters and out of those that sound good I choose one that is available on the realm I want to play. But I guess you don’t end up with a memorable one this way.

ive chosen Tesla back in the day after seein “the prestige” movie. B4 i had just Lordsoth avatars.
An now 90% of my chars is a declination of tesla: tslaman, telfsla, untesla, teslaren…

For my Kul Tirans, I chose Murley (I found it on a name generator site) as a name for this character and then created a druid alt named Starney (because balance, stars etc.) - but then I switched them (I honestly don’t remember why).

I actually prefer Murley as a name, I’m always tempted to switch again but then I would post on my Druid… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

For my Tauren characters, they are mostly called “Cloud…” (my hunter is called Cloudstrider), inspired by 90s series “Dr. Quinn” (Native American character Cloud Dancing).

For me who plays on an RP server my character name is really important. Not only do i think of their first name but surname as well for RP. I think of the race and a name fitting for a person of that race. Its quite tough actually especially with so many names taken.

Seems such a small change but i am sure it is more complicated but would like to see Blizz introduce surnames, or at least a purge of inactive names.

Usually something tolkien mashed with a nice sounding ending.

Originally I made my Evoker look silver.
I looked up the internet for names for Silver dragons from D&D and found one who was named Adalon and stole it

My mage is named Azoton. Azoto is the Greek word for Nitrogen which can be really cold storage. So a frost mage named after liquid nitrogen.

My shaman is named Etheras, it is one of the Greek words for the Wind element.

My DK is named Necroippotis, litteraly DeathKnight in Greek.

My Priest changed various names but is currently called Celestis which is clearly a reference to Celestial things.

My paladin changed various names and had several painful race changes too. Currently he is called Eosferon which in is an alteration of the word Eosforos which is the Greek word for Lucifer which literally translates to shining one/ Light bearer.

My Demon hunter is named Zerrael in homage to an nickname/title of Ciri in witcher 3 and her teleport attacks.

My warlock is named Cyanidon from Cyanide the poison (due to the dots)

My hunter is named Seluniel due to the influence of another similar name I saw in the credits of a Vurtne video about one of the players who was his nemesis.

My monk is currently named Bjornson in homage to the actor playing Gregor Clegane in game of thrones.

My druid is named Nyann because when I made her I was thinking cats.

My Warrior is currently a Kul-tiran named Mason because Kultirans felt so British that I somehow felt that fit.

My rogue, my first ever WoW character back when I had no clue about Warcraft is called the silly name Nrogara (anargam of Aragorn). Somehow I kept him the same out of nostalgia

I find random words and use Google translate for most chars.

This one is a play on my mains name though.

I also picked up a new naming trick recently that I use for D&D chracters.
I first pick 1-2 English words that describe the theme of my character then look up how these words are line in various languages (there is some site that gives them all) and pick those that I like.

Wow, people put a lot more thought into this that I do.

Benny, my Hunter. Named after my cat.

Termoonator, my Druid. He’s Tauren and kills things.

Xerra, my Paladin. I used to code in a scripting language called Arexx back in the Amiga days. So I reversed it and then realised I’d mis-spelt it years later.

Orcasmic, my Warrior. He’s an Orc. Obvious what the reference is.

Lloyds, my Rogue. Bank alt. If you’re in the UK then you’ll get it. Barclays wasn’t available.

Backward, my Mage. A friend called his character Rewind and I wanted to wind him up.

Avenger, my Warlock. Just because it was something cool I thought of, and it wasn’t taken.

Domino, my DH. Also named after one of my cats.

Frazzles, my Monk. Named after the crisps as it’s the first thing I came up with that seemed to fit a Troll monk.

Gorbachev, my DK. The character reminded me of the ex Russian leader so I checked the name and kept it.

Halitosis, my Evoker. Just seemed like a good idea. Dragons have nasty fire breath, right?

Sanxion, my Shaman. Named after the C64 classic game.

SpankyMonkey, my Priest. You guys quietly chuckling at the back have figured this one out.

I giggled. Love things like this.

I am levelling a shaman called Fizzi! It isn’t tolkien… but one of my dogs is called Kizzy and I call her “Fizzy Kizzy” because she is so bubbly and bouncy and I thought, hey that is a great name for a vulpera shaman. The vulpera also remind me of her.

I would like to, I can think of really cool surnames for night elves which don’t sound right for proper name. It shouldn’t be too complicated to be added, it’s like a title that you choose yourself. Obviously you shouldn’t be able to choose a surname that is the same as existing title.

My name comes from an Ogre insulting me while levelling. He told me I was a puny elf while I bested him in battle. I thought it was funny.

Some of my alts have proper suitable names but many are just variations of Puny which is my online handle.
