I did this for some pets on my hunter for a while. Calling them “Iron”, “Zinc”, “Calcium”, etc
Using fantasynamegenerator and wiki to get a general idea, as well as behindthename if i want something thematic.
So …
punyhuman
punygnome
puny…
?
I occasionally name a character based on some theme I plan on following with them.
I don’t think you want me to list all 48 or so chars that I have but I have Punyelf obviously, I do have a Punyhuman as well and some other silly variations.
But for example my Nightborne Hunter is called Talathielle, my Orc Rogue is called Gryshkha, my Troll Druid is called Zanzhi etc. They have what I call proper names
I take a look at my titles and come up with a name from that. For instance Camelhoarder the Camel-hoarder, which was my former main.
And with my current name Bads came from the title Salty
I spend a lot of time on Fantasy Name Generator, but never came up with something i like.
The only fantasy Names i liked a lot and of course named my Characters that way are Lithariel (from Shadows of Mordor) and Velandra a NPC in WoW.
For my female Characters i got mostly Real Life female names. People often think im female and that i like to transmog makes it also worse.
None of my male Character got ever a compliment, never someone sent me a friend request, but on my female Characters i hear all the time how good they look, nice Name, and People send friend requests. i call them desperate^^
Back 2 topic:
For me it is important that the name isn’t taken. So if i cant take Jenny, i wont call my Character Jênny, Jënny, Jênnylol or Jennyxdlolqt.
Nightelves i found a easy and very lore friendly way to do. Take anything you associate with Nightelves and combine it. Night, Moon, Shadows, Stars and so on.
Starshadow, Moonshadow, Nightshadow, Starsong, Moonsong… btw actual Names of my Nightelves.
Demonhunters Felsong and Felstorm.
Orc Warlock same principle, so i took Soul and something brutal like Meatgrinder -> Soulgrinder.
Orc’s: Storm, Thunder, Fury, Frostwolves, Blackhand.
Blackhammer Warrior and Thunderwolf and Stormfury Shamans.
Pandaren i like to take Names from Chinese Martial Arts movies.
But i wish i had more silly names ideas, so i dont have to take real names for my females.
Some examples of my silly are Cornflakes, Boogaloo, Badonkadonk, Snugglebites(from Borderlands), Lazerwoman and Shoopdawhoop from the “Imma firin’ mah Lazor” meme. Those are my favourite Names.
Think i only have silly names at this point haha
my mains have more “solid” names obv.
Lucky for me, i reuse my names and usually they aint taken on other realms
I look at the character… what name does she “look like”? I simply test “sounds” when I pick the name. Many of my characters end with “Ella”, so I think I have a thing for -Ella though. Sindorella, Tarindella, Arrabella… And Y’s… Aylish, Eyovy, Sharleya, Yranda…
I can’t name characters words… They need to be proper names. I have one named Coldwhisper(DK), but it annoys me.
Like the person below I also need the name to feel right for the race. Yranda e.g. in my case, I pronounce as “Ye-randa” with a dwarven accent. Sharleya is obviously a nightelf(well, obvious to me). Haileigh(Hailey) is a human hunter, and so on. Zuan was a panda monk, but I deleted that. I also have a tauren druid named “Toofa”. Made sense to me at least…
I will always go with names that suit the race.
I mean, if I was given free choice, my characters would have cool fantasy names like Griffin, Arrow, Ironpaw, Stout, Fireball, or Bruce. Naturally, without a new server in the last 10(?) years, all of those are tied up everywhere by someone’s never-played level 1 (or long-discarded 70). A lot of the time now it’s about what isn’t taken rather than what I’d really like.
If there’s a chance of a good pun then I’ll jump on it. Worgen priest named Goodgirl? Delighted to get that one! Worgen anything named Brightmoon? Hehehe, werewolf, hehehe You may also suspect that Alewin is just a little punny…
Pondering making a character on an RP server, I’ve been dropping the puns and looking for variants of Alewin; Elawin, Eruwin, Eruwan.
Punygod?
Chronicles of an Age of Darkness by Hugh Cook. Written in the late 80s / early 90s. Most are out of print now but can be picked up second-hand on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0552125660/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Sg-GCbW901KPE
The decalogy was originally imagined as part of a much larger work, but popularity dropped after the first few novels and Cook gave up writing full time. He sadly died a few years ago, so no more will be written.
His writing style is unusual, definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. Each book is a stand-alone tale, but they have many characters and events in common. The style varies from book to book so much it was once claimed he was actually several different authors.
Definitely one of those writers who sit in the “if you like them, then you really, really like them” camp. In my mind, Cook is the most influential fantasy author most people have never heard of. George R R Martin definitely read Cook before writing the GoT books, and I’m pretty sure at least one WoW dev has read them too.
Ork smash puny Elf, Waaaagh!
I usually choose two syllables that go together, maybe one is connected to the class. Something like Felwich or Salice or Salfire. btw I made those up just now so if you find one it’s not my character.
Oh boy… Mostly my names for characters r funny - stupid on my native language. So I wanted one normal name for mine char but short…like Gucci I wanted to give this char name Ora but it is taken
I never had desire to give some fancy or normal name… But for everything there is for the first time.
Naming depends on my ever changing mood. Do i want something serious, do i want something similair to my other names, or do i want something stupid
When i started i tried to have serious fantasy names fitting for the class. Then during wotlk i started making chars like taurens named moomoocow
When i changed to the Alliance during MoP, i ended up making characters named old man “generic name”
My latest character i made since a long while however is named dhiarrhea
I’m fussy about names. I think about them forever and if I can’t think of a name that I like that isn’t already taken on my server then I just don’t make the character. I see no point in making characters with names that I don’t like and I won’t use special symbols in names because to me it just makes names look a mess, no offence meant to anybody with symbols in their names.
I wanted to give mine undead char name Medena it means on mine language cute. It was taken and I use symbols
