How do you pick a char name?

do you pick random names or do you pick something your interested in?

(purpose of the topic - looking for ideas on how to ame my next char lol)

I spend a good amount of time deep thinking about it… and end up facerolling the keyboard.

As for the OP
I sometimes use a thematic name. Sometimes a name for a household object in my native language.
Some of my names are lastnames. Just to use with certain titles :sweat_smile:
And sometimes something that just sounds fitting or funny (like this Char)

I try to make a lore appropriate names for my character’s race. I look at the lore, and some generators to come up with variations.

I think of a name or a word that in my mind fits the character. Then I modify so it’s not a real actual name but sounds like a name. If I can’t use it I modify it further until I can create a character with that name.

For example the name I started with for this character was Cedric.

Use a generator to get some thought about how are the names of your race created and then create one by yourself (or use the ones from the generator).

You can also look on e.g. Wowhead or in the game at the NPCs of certain race to get some inspiration.

Depends on my random thoughts at the time.

Sometimes I am thinking about the absurdity of Sisyphus. Other times fluctuating between the heroism of Homer, or the comedy of Homer (Simpson).

Just pray for a usefull brainfart. This guy has the most stupid name you’ll ever see. I used the name ‘Jikke’ in an online soccer game 16 years back, because all the letters where close together on the keyboard.
Lacking creativity, I named my first two chars Jikke and Jikko, not knowing i would still play them as a grown up.
Later alts have more fancy names, good ones even, although I just leveled a ‘elder’ Murtaugh, who spams /Im too old for this sh*t. Guess Ill never grow up.
Tldr, pray to creativity gods and use what sounds good to you.
Just dont use Stabby Mcstabbins, Onepunchbull, or other crap like that and youre good.

My favourite fantasy novel series of all time is pretty obscure so it provides a great resource for names.

I just picked the name of the char I like the best from the game series which I love and than I rolled a race which is closest to it in the WoW :wink: :smiley: .

She was a ranged support char in the ME just like my WoW char is here to. I’m the one who will do the job for the team, protect it and sometimes even do “miracles” to save it from the imminent danger.

Naming the chars that i intend to actually play often, takes me ages. Then when I do come up with one it is usually taken arrghh!
Its normally relevant to the class and specc I will play.
My druid was named after a cartoon char from the early 80s. The correct spelling was taken so i just replaced the C with a K

Could I enquire what that is. Just finished last book of the wheel of time “A memory of light” and my life feels empty until I find more stories :slight_smile:

Tolkien or NPCs in the game and than making a mix of the names …

Over the years i have had different systems for names, This character for example is from my table of elements era. Nowadays i am mostly making up phantasy names that fit for the character in question based on theme (not just talking about wow but in other games too). Going for something that fits theme and sounds nice in my head.

Usually food names, but I am always surprised that every server has a char named Broccoli :no_mouth:

So if the food-based name doesn’t give me a new char, I always grab my books with mushrooms, butterflies and fish (not a cookbook) and go for the latin names :slight_smile:

I just pick random Norwegian/Scandinavian names since most of them fits horde characters

My main has a silly name, because I’m puny in some way shape or form on most gaming platforms. I give most of my alts proper more fitting names.

I either use a randomizer or if I’m not too lazy a name that fits with the medieval/archaic or whatever the theme of the race I’m playing as is.

So for example for naming a Paladin instead of using a adjective like Lucifer I would use a name like Aileen.
