So, I’m suddenly in Valdrakken and hearing about Raszageth’s death just because I followed a quest marked on my map, but I’m only at the part where I’m doing quests at the Ohn’Ahran Plains.

If you look at your Quest Log next to the Main Map, there should ba sections for the different Campaigns. The Dragonflight Campaign is the core story. The Valdrekken Campaign is also very important to the core story. The Dragonscale, Centaur and Tuskar campaigns are somewhat related to this but more side stories.
You’ll need to earn some Renown to unlock some of these campaign quests but the Quest Log will say something like “Earn Renown 12 with Valdrakken to continue this campaign”.
