How do you stick to a main character?

I really appreciate all the replies.

It gives food for thought to hear all the different ways people play the game, and what makes you all pick a main.

What Iā€™m getting out of this thread, is that my idea of what made people ā€œpick a mainā€, varies A LOT from person to personā€¦

I have up until now been focusing on creating a checklist of requirements, that HAD to be fulfilled by ONE characterā€¦ Which based on your responses is not the way other people do it.

Most people in here doesnā€™t pick a character to play ā€œbecause itā€™s perfectā€ā€¦ And some of you (who I relate to the most) play whatever you feel up for at that current point in time, and donā€™t worry too much about ā€œsticking to ONE characterā€.

So maybe the issue here isnā€™t ā€œpicking a classā€ā€¦ The issue is my ā€œI NEED to find ONE CHARACTER to play FOREVERā€ mindsetā€¦ :face_exhaling:

I think Iā€™ll try to ā€œlet goā€ of my overanalyzing brain, go to the character creation window, and let my ā€œfeelingsā€ pick a character/class combo insteadā€¦ Try and ā€œgo with the flowā€. And then on the side, Iā€™ll have 1 of each class picked out that I can then ā€œplay for funā€, if I feel like it without them being ā€œa new mainā€ā€¦

I can definitely relate to this human condition

You donā€™t HAVE to pick a main. Maybe youā€™ll end up with a main naturally if you let go a bit like you said

Not doable to me. With 1 new tier set they can make your fun enjoyable spec miserable to play. Not to start about full reworks per expansion.

For me it was about visuals, the feel of the class, and the race.

That said I did swap mains a few times over the years, but that is primarily because I was raiding mythic, where I aim to be as versatile as possible. Hybrids did it for me, though at some point I had to make a transition over to ranged DPS because they are always needed in mythic content.

I started off as a paladin main, playing Prot and Holy at the start, before I made the transition to Retribution during Legion. Shifting away from him was tough because I transitioned to a class that only has a DPS role (hunter, and then mage), but I never really had a single main, but rather two.

I feel this may not be a problem for me in the upcoming expansion. In previous expansions the additional power you had to grind on every single alt basically forced me to play two DPS classes (Mage on Horde, Warlock on Alliance). It soured the entire gameplay for me because I always liked tanking and healing (I was always a tank main until Legion).

Now that talent trees nullify a large majority of the grind, on top of cross-faction raiding being a thing I can finally swap over to having a DPS and Hybrid main, though I am not yet decided on whether that will be Monk and Mage, or Monk and Warlock.

There is nothing wrong in not picking a main, by the way. Instead, what you can consider is to delegate a character for the content you want to do. Set a character aside (your DH, for example) to do the quests, achievements and collections, while for instanced content pick another whoā€™s playstyle sticks with you. Hybrids are also a really good option to choose as mains, as you have two, or three different roles to cover and experience.

That is why Monk will be my primary main. I like to do all three roles, as they keep the game fresh for me.

Started as a huntard in vanilla, got tired of getting ganked by rogues in bgā€™s, so I re-rolled one and itā€™s been my main class ever since.

A brief update for anyone who is curious

I opened the ā€œcreate a new character class/raceā€ screen, and just kind of ā€œturned off my annoying brainā€, to get a feel about which class/race combo I would gravitate towards, if I wanted to ā€œhave funā€.

So instead of overcomplicating things by analyzing their abilities, fantasy, or armor styleā€¦ I just focused on ā€œfun and enjoymentā€.

I tapped into my Warcraft 3 childhood nostalgia, and decided on a Night Elf. And class wise I felt strongly for Survival Hunter. :man_shrugging: Funny enough also the character Iā€™m writing from, so maybe my subconscious has been trying to tell me somethingā€¦

Iā€™ll give this character a shot with a newā€¦ ā€œI donā€™t HAVE to always play this characterā€ mindset, and see how it goes. I have good feelings about this approach.

Thanks everyone for trying to help out.

I think being a completionist helps you stick with one character. I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever ran out of things to do, so why would I need an alt?
As long as there are reputations, achievements, mounts and titles to earn, there is a reason to stick with your main character and continue.

Eventually your main character has so much history, you just canā€™t replicate that with another.

It sounds to me that you mainly enjoy PvP or you are having issues enjoying PvP. I put it to you again that, especially since you love alts, you should make a purely PvP character AND a ā€œmainā€ for everything else.

I donā€™t know what is fun in PvP but it sounds like for a main that would do everything else, you would be very happy as a fury warrior. I find the enraged regen + victory rush + the fact we get second wind regardless of spec to be more than enough healing. They can get the mogs for all weapons and imo plate looks the best - you can essentially farm off set DK gear and look dark. They can be all the races you mentioned.

Perhaps a rogue for PvP? And remember, classes change a lot so warrior or others may become more fun in PvP.

I have this toon who is my main and does everything first but I also have a human hunter who has done Loremaster and all the reps up to exalted up to BfA. I look forward to eventually making a profession alt army

People also change mains a lot - they may change per expansion depending which class seems the most fun or half way through! It may help to think of yourself as having an army that collectively gets your account the reps etc you want one character to do. Maybe you main an NE warrior for DF and do the renown farm but play something else for group content. Itā€™s all about perspective and embracing the fact that sometimes staying with one character isnā€™t for everyone!

Pardon the wall of text crit.

Hehe you hit the nail on the head there, in regards to the two things I spend my time doing in WoW. PvP and MOG farming.

Ever since I started playing WoW, I have been attracted to the Warrior class, but I always stopped again since it has a reputation for ā€œrequiring a healer babysitting you in PvPā€ā€¦ So it always felt like a no-go. Especially considering I love WPvP, and ALWAYS am opted into WM.

Maybe with the new class changes and talents, Warrior has become much better for solo PvPā€¦ Iā€™ll take your message to heart when it comes to ā€œnon-PvPā€ content.

Iā€™m the opposite. I simply cannot play more than 1 character. I had to force myself and use shadowlands boost on a horde character just to finally get toys/mounts etcā€¦ that only horde can get.

I am the opposite. I canā€™t stand starting from scratch with another character. I wish we could have different classes on the same character but we donā€™t so this is it.

I mai ret pala. I know this class always be B or C tire no matter what.

Its kinda semi hybrid class and suits for all contents. Its jack of all trades master of none. May be good bursty class.

But I am altoholic so I played every spec and class and race in this game. Playing alts keeps me occupied.

I kind of wanna swap main, but what stops me is, that I wanna play horde, and I donā€™t wanna play belf again, but all the other horde races arenā€™t relatable for me at all. Iā€™d love to play undead, but undeads look like theyā€™re balding, and they look like creeps/stalkers with their bend backs and low posture. Itā€™d be cool, if they changed undead models to actually look badass with a straight back, etc., because the forsaken are cool af lore-wise, but they look like trash. Would like to play something like Nathanos, or Ainz from Overlord, so I just end up sticking to my mage, bc thereā€™s nothing else for me in wow

Im just lazy. From vanilla to legion i only played my shaman. End of legion when i got free character boost i changed my main to warrior. Now in sl is my first time (except DH from bfa) to actually levelup few alts, and noticed leveling alts was more fun than actually play sl content. When DF launch it is back to warrior and stay with it.

itā€™s easy as a paladin main you know your already the BEST class and everyone else is playing some fotm crap

Before wow i played lineage 2 for 9 years,since 2004 to 2013,then i started playing wow untill now ^^

i allways mained a paladin in lineage 2 since it was the best tank for raids and olimpiad (1v1 arena) witch was the content i liked more, and also play magic the gathering card game since 1994 and allways mained the color white witch stands for paladins the light etc,in wow ofc,i started with a paladin, and it will allways be my main.

i allways liked to play the ā€œgood sideā€ on games and also in real life ^^

and also help others with life when needed bop, sacrifice, etc.

I love elves and I love animals so BM Hunter seemed like a natural choice. I never regretted it. I never make a new main. All the achievements and factions i would have to grindā€¦ no thank you

I got a weird taste or whateverā€¦that whenever I play any fantasy RPG/MMORPG game, mage or any caster equivalent is always my 1st choice. WoW was obviously no exception. While the faces changes(started as human mage before race change), the class will always be mage.
I dabbled in rogue, palas, locks and etcā€¦yet always came back to mage as mainā€¦so yeah. I am hopeless mage/caster fanboy.

For me it was simpleā€¦ I love to heal and range DPS, I love pure, nature oriented fantasy and loreā€¦ I love dwarvesā€¦ Mix it up and you will get Dwarf Shaman. Also for ā€œbondingā€ with character is always good to make a background story, do few grinds, reputations, professions, farming etc.

I have totally opposite problemā€¦ Whenever I swap to another character it doesnā€™t feel right, something is missing.

Since you donā€™t want to be pure DPS and want some diversity and all other heal/tank classes donā€™t fit to you or you donā€™t like something about them, I would suggest you to wait few more days and try Evoker.

I hope you will find your soulmate and that you will enjoy playing it. Best wishes from drunk dwarf

P.S. ā€œWash your back!ā€
