How do you stick to a main character?

I know this is probably the most discussed topic in regards to WoW hehe, but I could really use some guidance.

I started playing WoW at the end of Legion, and since then I have struggled picking a main. I swap characters every week, convincing myself that ā€œthis is going to be my mainā€, and this cycle has been repeating itself for years nowā€¦

I would love to ā€œjust pick ONE characterā€ to do my main progress on (farming rep, completing stories, doing achievements on, etcā€¦), but for some reason I just canā€™t connect to any specific character on my account, or any of the races and classes there is availableā€¦

You knowā€¦ A character that you bond with, which you just KNOW you will ALWAYS play, because you find itā€™s playstyle fun and enjoyable. :100:

No matter what I do, whenever I find a ā€œperfect classā€ I will get bored with itā€™s playstyle after a few weeks, and start to equip my ā€œthe grass is always greener on the other sideā€ goggles, and gravitate towards another classā€¦

Because of this, I have NEVERā€¦ EVERā€¦ been able to ā€œcompleteā€ any rep grind, or any other type of content, since I have to start over every time I swap character. :frowning:

I have the maximum amount of characters you can have, and I have deleted 40+ other max lvl characters to make room for the new onesā€¦ I DO enjoy having alts and leveling them, but I would also love to have ONE MAIN character, which I can log into and continue ā€œcompleting contentā€ on.

2 months ago, I set a goal for myself to find a main for Dragonflights releaseā€¦ And Iā€™m stuck hehe.

I would HATE going into Dragonflight, while continuing this boring repeated cycle of ā€œmaining a new character every weekā€ā€¦

So basically what Iā€™m askingā€¦ is:

How did you all end up picking a main character, which now always sticks with you into new content? What makes that character STICK to you?

Have you tried all the classes and all the specs? Do you have a favourite race?

For me I have always loved elves so naturally picked those in WoW. I used to main Druid as it was the most fun for me but switched to Paladin in Legion and now play them on all games. Being an Elf Paladin is now my thing. I guess you just havenā€™t found that yet.

If you love alts here is an idea: Have an alt that does a specific set of content e.g. PvP, Loremaster, Reputations, Raiding, M+, Pet Battlingā€¦

When you get bored of an activity, switch.

Created character for first time like 15+ years ago and still playing with same race, class combo, tried all others, but always I come back to my main.
Donā€™t read, watch meta tops, flavour of the month, play what you like visually and gameplay wise.

For me itā€™s a time thing. Iā€™ve been playing this character for so long and have so much progress on it rep wise etcā€¦whenever I log onto an alt the lack of reps and other things annoys me

I play many specs for a simple reason : diversity/curiosity , try other things .
My brain is more inclined for progress then conservation .
Hope this helps .

You wont stick to 1 character anyway, just do what you like - dungeons, raidsā€¦ play 1-3 characters each season then switch them.
Your are just that type of person. The achivements does not matter anyway, worthless grind.

Iā€™ve been playing this character for 7 years, i have a human warlock too, also played warlock in classic era-tbc. I just love dark magic fantasy and the class itself.

Also playing 3 dps spec classes helps a lot if you like to dps. You have always a choice for quite different play styles.

I have pretty much played most race/class combos there are. And every class you can pick, I have at one point or another been wanting to main 5-10 times by now

I have always gravitated towards certain races, like Dwarf, Void Elf, and Night Elf.

But the class is a puzzle for me, since I like the ā€œdarker fantasiesā€, but at the same time I donā€™t like their playstyle. And the classes I DO like the playstyle of, have fantasies I dislike.

For example:

  • Warrior: I like that it can farm everything and their playstyle is satisfying, but they donā€™t have ā€œon demand healingā€ or fun CC utility, and I often feel like other ā€œgood mobility classesā€ can toy with me in PvP.
  • Death Knight: REALLY cool fantasy, but boring playstyle in the long run.
  • Paladin: Love their utility, but hate their ā€œgood sided fantasyā€, and I think Ret playstyle is boring in solo content.
  • Hunter: Super fun playstyle, and lots of extra mechanics like pets, but not the most ā€œbadassā€ fantasy out there.
  • Shaman: Fun playstyle for both dps specs, and awesome utility, but I dislike their fantasy.
  • Druid: I love Druids playstyle, but dislike that they are the complete opposite of a ā€œdark fantasyā€. And Boomie is very dull for me to play.
  • Monk: Super fun playstyle, but dislike the ā€œshaolin themeā€ a lot.
  • Rogue: Very fun for ONE thing, boring for everything else.
  • Demon Hunter: Super fun class, but feels like a glass canon in PvP, which I hate.
  • Mage: Super fun playstyle, but purely ranged dpsā€¦
  • Priest: LOVE the H.P. Lovecraftian SPriest fantasy, but hate the playstyle hehe.
  • Warlock: Really cool fantasy and look, but I canā€™t get it to work in PvP and always feel incredibly slow and easy to kill.

So yeahā€¦ Which one is the better ā€œnon-perfect choiceā€ here hehe?

My friend does the same. He has a Paladin he played since Classic.

I would LOVE to feel obligated to one character in this way :joy: Maybe it would counteract my indecisiveness.

Maybe a less ā€œstrict approachā€ is a valid answer to tryā€¦ But I would still need to figure out which class to play primarily.

I have tried this approach of limiting myself to 2-3 characters, but always swap them out after a few weeks, and then the cycle starts again.

Hmmm maybe picking based on ā€œwhat makes you feel good about the fantasyā€ is a good way to go about itā€¦ Iā€™m just so fixated on playstyle, that I have a hard time with it.

Have you tried DH in pvp recently? They are super strong now

Only advice I can give you; donā€™t have ADHD.
Itā€™s a ā€œproblemā€ I have and sticking to one main has been close to impossible.
I have variety of charachters on the alliance and horde side so instead of leveling new charachters I tend to switch over to the next one when I lose interest on my current fotm.

Iā€™m a casual player NB.
I understand this could be problematic for mythic+ and high end raid players.

Yeah I gave DH a go when the new talents came out. The issue I have with classes like DH though, is that it is very dependent on meta.

So if I pick DH as a main, then I might end up in a situation during a future patch where Havoc is ā€œbadā€, and Iā€™m forced into getting squashed in PvP.

Survivability as Havoc has always felt a bit off, since it depends on how aggressively you attack, and how much dmg you can pump out.

At least thatā€™s how it felt to play it, which is too bad since it is a really cool class.

I feel like pvp depends a lot on your skill and not meta though. If you know your class well and play it well then youā€™ll probably end up still kicking behinds. If you want to follow meta then itā€™s almost impossible to pick a main to stick with.

Yes I agree  However even if you donā€™t follow meta (which I try not to), then DH is one class where healing is purely based on leech, rather than a ā€œon-demand healing abilityā€. So if their dmg gets nerfed, itā€™s a harder hit than any other class since they loose healing as well.

At least thatā€™s my current perception of DH.

As an mage its extremely simple, get bored of fire? respec to frost, get bored off frost go arcane, bored of arcane go back to fire and so the loop continues if you have serious commitment issues about your main then iā€™d recommend becoming an fotm reroller, rerolling an new spec each tier keeps the game fresh to others

True I guess. Though you have some spells to increase dodge etc too and stuns.

This girl is sort of my love. Mogs look pretty on her, she is pretty herself, and I was fond of the class fantasy as well. Plus, now sheā€™s my most geared toon at 300.

And has all my reps from SL as well. :smiling_face_with_tear:

Oh, and sheā€™s my forum main, the name everyone knows me as.

Yeah thatā€™s true.

Just gave DH another go against one of the Defective Colossus in ZerethM, since I use them as a ā€œbenchmarkā€ of sorts heheā€¦ In comparison to my same geared Warrior, DH seemed to still struggle with staying alive. I consider Warrior to be a ā€œbottom classā€ when it comes to requiring a pocket healer, so thatā€™s not a good sign I think, when DH struggles a lot more.

So although it is one of the top ā€œfunā€ classes, it just lacks something that is really important to me.

Btw I really appreciate the responses.

You donā€™t bond you just pick one that you like the play style.

I get bored very fast so every season is usually a new main. I stick with it for a season, then continue or change if bored in the next season.

I canā€™t, but I wish I could. Thereā€™s something undeniably romantic about it!

Maybe Iā€™ll break the curse with this one

Lock it is then.
Main warlock and 1 alt on rotation or something:)
Every class has some weakness.
