How do you stick to a main character?

Why dont you just create alts? You save tons of money and that way you can have a bunch of characters from diferent races.

Well in shadowlands it was easy…esspecialy before s4.

When you leveled up to 60…then it hit you like a truck …all the chores and :poop: you have to do to be semioptimal to even start…and then you go “ye fk that” and log of.

yes. but i decided with ele. enh is a bit meh imho

It is. Told you it’s simple… I’m never bored on ele! But you can still off-spec enha like meh

Someone playing the same class/spec inspects me because I out-damage them and then they take an extra minute or two looking at my gear to figure out how it’s even possible when they are 15 ilvl higher.

That’s when I /wave at them and then start jumping around.

If this happens often enough, the class/spec becomes my main.

You simply don’t! I can’t stay at one class even thru a whole season. I jump between all classes since I get bored quick :stuck_out_tongue:

In my opinion after reading the first bit of your post you kinda have to start valuing your time better; changing character and having multiple characters to the point that you can’t have more in your account is a huge waste of time.
With that said and my desire to dare expressing my unrequested opinion about how you manage your time satisfied, I say the following:

I made a story for my character, I lived the world of WOW through that character and that made me feel in love, in a manner of speaking, with this character.
It wasn’t the first I played and I only used to play one spec of the class but I loved it.
I wanted to do everything, and I say everything, with it; didn’t really matter if it was inconvenient or if there was a better class.

If you want to stick to one I think you have to match the things you like, in general in real life, with the character.
Then look at things you like that are in the game and look if they’re able to your character; would be transmog, mounts that fit your fantasy, whatever.
Last try to actually create a bond with your pixelated “friend”.

If you focus too much of the fancy things that other classes have and you see the weakness of your character in a really negative way, then could be hard to stick with your character.
If you try a different approach and look for solutions to compensate the flaws of your character then you’ll start building a bond with it.

(If you try to overcome the flaws of your class and you build a bond with your “friend”, you will waste less time, AKA: don’t have to farm every profession skill again, every reputation, gear, transmogs, you name it).

Either you find your main eventually or learn to accept that you just aren’t that kind of player!

My main is a pandaren BM hunter.
I always play a hunter or ranger class in games as I just love the aesthetic and gameplay style (I can’t melee…like, at all. I can’t tell what’s going on that close and always wind up standing the wrong way!)
Never could settle on a race until MoP and I met my bootiful chonky panda girl and then I had my main!

Maybe Blizzard just haven’t created the race/class that you are destined to main, OP!

Laziness mostly, can’t be bothered to level up another character.

My main is druid because it is so very versatile (i.e. I can do everything with it without craving for another class to cover a play style) and fits my artistic and thematic style preference.
If you cannot find a single class/race to personally identify with on a meta level ideally, then maybe you are simply losing interest in the game and are prioritizing different experiences, i.e. craving for something new, and maybe pandering to the progress addiction aspect.
Maybe explore other games that totally do not trigger such things, that do not focus on progress, have no achievements and such. Maybe simply story.

In general, when encountering any kind of roadblock situation, it is wise to assume a different vantage point so you are getting good contrast for seeing the problem. (Test extremes, test opposites etc.) Then such situations become an opportunity to learn about yourself, which helps make wiser choices in life. … It’s not just a game. It’s you, a real person, doing real things in a real world, in this case playing a character in a simulated world. It is just as relevant as anything else you do, because you chose to spend your lifetime with it.

You can’t really choose a character based on what spec is stronger at the moment because that will change.
First decide what is the most important in a character - the looks, the abilities, what weapons and armor they can use, the lore.
For me one of the most exciting part of the game is when new piece of gear drops. And I think the most famous and remembered weapons in the game are swords and axes. So ideally my character should be able to equip both of them. So I made a list of classes that fit this criteria. And then I started to eliminate classes that I wouldn’t enjoy as much. When you are left with 2-3 classes play all of them and the one that you play the most can become your main.

And remember that there is no perfect class, if there was one everyone would be playing it and the game would be boring.

I stick to my main because I do not feel any motivation to farm 90+ exalted reputations again. Maybe if they ever make reputations account-wide, I will consider it.

Even better… Re-spec to resto and throw some ice-cold buckets of water on people around you

for me its also hard, i dont chase fotm but gameplay wise.

I usually jump around between DK DH Druid Mage Warlock.

Dk is overall fun but kinda slow but i do like it most of the time.

DH is great but it has 1 single spec, they change its rotation like momentum being mandatory which i dont like, or throw glaive like now which i also dont like you may be stuck with a gameplay u dont enjoy, i like demonic.

Warlock fixes all DH issues 3 dps spec, at least 1 is always viable and playable and decently fun imho, it is slow, but its also tanky, its my recent discovery being able to face tank a lot of stuff as caster is kinda fun.

Druid i love feral a lot for bleeds dots and invis really fun to play in bg’s, resto is also fun hots. Tank is ok i mean for me and i dont like boomkin style. But here im split its great but sometimes i kinda miss my fel warlock/dh.

so these are my main contenders :frowning:

I love reading peoples perspective every time a new person comments. And I’m amazed how much attention my post is getting

If I were to just focus on the comments from people who play ONE character, and not the ones who play multiple characters… I noticed that people (roughly) have these reasons for sticking to a main character:

  • You played it for so long, that it would feel bad to play another character.
  • You knew from day one what you enjoyed class/race wise, and never looked back.
  • You connect emotionally to your character.
  • Laziness/hate leveling new characters.
  • You play the “content”, and not the “class”, shifting your focus on what is important.
  • You play 2-3 classes that fulfill every playstyle you enjoy.

If I had to pinpoint my specific issue, and why I personally keep swapping character, I think it’s because I play the character instead of playing the content…

I have spend the last couple of days since I made this post, and taken my Hunter which is one of the characters I keep returning to because I find it’s playstyle the most fun, and I just started focusing on grinding PvE content…

Not at one point… AT ALL… Have I allowed myself to “complete an expansion and it’s content”… Because I was afraid to waste all that time just to swap character again the week after… :point_left: :face_exhaling:

And maybe all this time I am just psyching myself out… Fixating on “not making the wrong class/race choice”… Not allowing myself to get attached to ONE character through playing the content…?

I really think I hit the nail on the head here based on everyones help. So I will continue to play my Hunter and try to “complete content” with it.

If you have endless time like me you should just try every Class and spec. I have no idea which Im going to en up maining during DF. Also game will have less systems so gearing every spec to max tier in PvP for example is not going to be a problem.

I’ve been playing since Wrath and I still don’t have a main character. Well, I think my main would be my DK which I always play first to max level on each new expansion, but I rarely do any end game content with him. Also, that character is on a realm that is nowadays considered empty, or dead. All my friends from that realm are long gone.

I am an altoholic, I play many different characters on both factions, so it is very hard for me to join in a guild, because I may abandon that character for weeks while I play my other characters etc.

I do have few preferences I like the most. This one for example is my latest creation, but my first max level alliance side warrior and I am planning to play most with this one on next expansion, because I just love fury warriors  One major aspect for me is the capability of soloing and killing mobs with style. My other two liked characters are my said DK and BM hunter, which was my first character I ever created

Here is an idea. Pick one and delete the rest. I am fortunate/unfortunate that I picked a Class back on 2008 and played through Lich King and Cata with it. Whenever I come back I always play him. For sure I have started alts to level with friends and got some of them to max level but I have no emotional draw to play them. I just click with him emotionally/gameplaywise and it is brilliant to think all that time ago, all those memories, I was playing him. Thing is you don’t get that at all if you flip around. Bite the bullet and start deleting you will thank me

Well that wouldn’t work for me or the OP. We both started playing relatively recently so not much history and memories for each character.
Back in vanilla/TBC/WOTLK you weren’t spoiled for choice as much as we are today and choosing a main was slightly easier. And then you carry on with the same character through the expansions.
But for someone that is creating a character now/recently it’s different because you don’t lose much when switching to a new one.
So the point is to help choose a main not just say play one character. What would you do if you started playing today? Or what would you do if WOW2 was released?

find a class/race combo that you enjoy and roll with it, i tried lots of things before landing on this character and i’m loving the class fantasy of shadow priest!
