Warcraft does have a level of precedent for changing one’s class. Like Warriors and Priests becoming Paladins. Majority of Warlocks are essentially Mages, except better. And so forth
(Lorewise Classes are anything but balanced. Like there is no reason for Paladin or DK to downgrade into a Warrior)
Yeah but what I mean is, it is more of an evolution from Warrior or Priest to become a Paladin or as Shaman or Mage to become a Warlock. But being a Warlock makes it hard to change back again and those become Paladin as you say will not likely turn back to Warrior or Priest again. I mean even using more then one Magic type whas considered a special feat of Med’an until they retconed him out again.
While in FF XIV from the world building there is no problem from switching to the equivalent of warlock to priest or back again depending on how you feel.
Med’an is an extreme example of a complete clusterfornication of ideas. We still have characters like Illidan or Khadgar, who are effectively multiclassed based ont heir feats alone.
But yes, many of the classes carry a sort of evolutionary thread, between the classes, where anything short of plot armor is gonna result in a fatal power cliff, for comparably competent members of the classes.
Well, paladins are warrior-priests (of the Light). Their focus is narrower than that of the priest (of the Light). They’re not meant to hold mass, help with people’s psychological needs, or hold professional discourse about the harder questions of their religions, they are meant to go out, smite evil, heal the injured and bolster the faithful. Other priests (of the Light) have time for that stuff, the paladin has to go through a warrior’s training as well - which can’t get his full attention either, because of the necessary lessons and preparations that their faith and their magic needs.
It is a true hybrid class, which is why knights as well as priests (of the Light) were among those who rose up to be the first paladins in (human) lore. So any race that has priests of the Light and warriors should be able to have paladins.
Not all races that have priests do, though. Void Elf lore seems to suggest that they aren’t exactly big on the Light, and mostly got their priests class to be able to play as Shadow Priests, which are a perfect thematic fit for them, for example, and while the Shadowmoon Orcs did have a tradition that fit the Shadow priest, there was nothing regarding the Light. The paladin, as it is now, is exclusively a wielder of the Light, though. So I wouldn’t agree that lore-wise the matter is settled, when they give all races priests. If they care about fitting it to the Lore and not just to include it as a gameplay thing there should be some explanation - or some rework of the paladin, with a cosmetic shadow pala, or something like that.
