How does Blizzard decide the shard you are in?

THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT ABOUT WAR MODE AND BEING KILLED!!!

Ok got that out of the way…

My main (this character) has seen less than a dozen Alliance all expac in the open world, every create drop is completely uncontested, there are no alliance around at all.

Today I decided to level an alt… The alt is on the same server (Azjol-Nerub.) Alliance were everywhere, I mean dozens and dozens of them everywhere, in all zones… in the end I had to turn War Mode off

(AGAIN THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT ABOUT BEING KILLED IN WAR MODE) .

Interested I tried a second and third alt (again same server) … The second (another DH - no alliance at all, none, not one… War crate dropped as a level 61 I claimed it myself, not one was around.)

Tried a third (Druid) and it is like the first one, may have been even worse, I am dead on landing on a herb or mine node in seconds… dozens of Ally everywhere.

The question is why? How do Blizzard decide what shard you are on? Can you change this (without having to be in a party.)

This is not the first time I have noticed this, I saw the same patterns in BFA as well regarding this.

I’d like to know also how it actually works. It seems to be the absoulute extremes of both.

Either 10 horde vs 1 alliance or 10 alliance vs 1 horde. There is no inbetween.

Yeah same here. It is very odd.

When I first ventured to the DL there was literally 100+ Alliance at the main landing area. I mean seriously they were everywhere which was fantastic (Die Horde scum!!!). However, I then ventured down that path to explore a bit and on my return there were 2 Alliance and about 10 Horde ganking people on arrival. I was thinking WTF!!!

Fortunately I was a Rogue so my Cloaking Device protected me, but seriously what is it with their phasing???

I’ve found the same issue. When I log alliance horde is everywhere and vice versa. I’m always fighting a raid group solo or with 1-2 others at the most.

Same with me as horde. It’s really weird.

No its real easy, one person gets in then they invite the rest of the team as they will be ported into shard. You will need to do the same or remain a victim :frowning: Technically its exploiting the mechanix for the reward or the new version of GY camping.

The same way they decide everything…

In war mode your character is not on your realm. So realm is only relevant if on a normal or rp server, since rp players will be sharded separately from normal players. If there are more than x number of players in a zone, a new zone shard is spawned and gets populated gradually. Shard balance is complicated by different players continually entering/leaving zones, instances, groups. When you join a group, you join the leaders shard (unless they are not in your zone). And when you leave, you return to your shard.

Because of faction balance difference, on normal war mode horde are more likely to see less alliance. On rp war mode, horde are more likely to see more alliance. Sometimes there will even be shards without the other faction because not enough of them to balance.

Doesn’t answer WHY this character NEVER sees Alliance and my new Alt ALWAYS is vastly out numbered 10+ to 1.

Could depend on location perhaps, I don’t know. Are you standing in the same spot when on your 70?

Yeap tired that… It is odd and I am not the only one noticing it. You seem to be stuck in a WM shard and they are all seem to be vastly unbalanced with no way of changing it.

As I said I am working on three alts (plus this character) Two are in all Horde shards and two are in nearly ALL Alliance (in fact I have turned WM off on those as it is impossible to level )

My question is why is it like this? It does not appear to be dynamic as nothing has changed on all 4 since week one of Dragon Flight. (I thought I’d leave it a week or two and see if stuff has changed, it has not. )

There is nothing we can do to control what shard we are in beyond shard hopping.

I see more players from my own realm in WM off than I do in WM on, but then more players are in WM off than on so you’re more likely to be with other realms in WM on.

The only way I’ve managed to jump shards is to join groups or get friends to invite me.
