How does the gearing system even work?

Like I get gear but its all really bad, and then I get these upgrade thingies which either the game does not tell me where or how to gear it, or I’ve just skipped that info.

How are you meant to gear up?

You’ve skipped or not started it. There is a quest at the top of the tower in thaldrazsus to fly to forbidden reach. That chain continues and takes you down into zaralek caverns and one of the first quests you get there explains the flightstones and upgrades.

Tldr

Flightstones upgrade items. It costs 50% less if you’re re upgrading a new item to an ilvl you already had.

Crests are used one time per slot to upgrade to a new ilvl past 402. Whelps to 411, drakes to 424, wyrms to 437, aspects to 441. All upgrades still require flightstones.

An example.

Get a 402 helm, upgrade it to 424 using whelp crests, drake crests, and flightstones.

Get a new helm that’s 415. Upgrading it to 424 only costs flightstones (50% less) and upgrading it from 424 up to 437 costs stones and wyrm crests.

There are quests ingame leading you by the hand, showing you how the system works.
There was an indepth blog posted by Blizzard on the main warcraft page att he lead up to the new system too.

The info is out there if you look.

Cant I just get a straight up upgrade instead of fiddling with weird stones and whatnot?

Why do I need to read up on how to gear, when the old system worked for years.

I am sorry for the ignorance I just feel really stupid at this gearing system.

Well you need something to upgrade items with, similar to valor in the past.

The old system was something people read up on when it was introduced too. The difference is that the old system only covered dungeon gear, this one covers all content and the items to upgrade them can be obtained from all content, helping keep different types of content relevant and competitive with eachother for longer.

Alright so where can I find this blogpost that Demonseed was talking about?

The blogpost doesn’t really contain more information than what I said in my post above.

This is the post though. It goes over things in a very dry / spreadsheety way which overcomplicates it a lot if that’s not really how you learn.

I’ll take your words and the post to account, thanks.

This chart gives you an overview of the gear system.

The beauty is, if you’ve upgraded a slot before you don’t have to use crests to catch up on a new piece. It also only costs half the flightstones to get you back to the same level as before.

Since that chart was made, a new mythic track has been introduced but you don’t need to worry about that if you’ve only just started.
