How exactly is it that CheckPVP website knows my alts when I've never used the website before?

I’m sorry if this isn’t the right place to post this but I don’t know where to post about this or how to feel about this… I saw someone talk about the website and so I went on there and checked it out. I searched for my druid and the website showed 2 of my alts, one of which is level 111 and have only been played for less than 48 hours. How is this possible? The more characters of mine I searched up, there more alts it added to the list.

Once again sorry if this is not the right place but I feel really weirded out about this, about how a website I’ve never used and that has no affiliation with Blizzard can track my characters.

I know this isn’t personal information so there’s technically no “privacy concern” per se but I still feel really creeped out that my activity in the game is being tracked on a third-party website without my knowledge.

I’ve never bothered with looking at the WoW API to see how it works but my guess is some form of scraping based on account wide achievements / data and it just forms a probable relation between your characters.

For me, it only shows alts that someone has previously searched for. So my mage doesn’t show up - now I searched for it, it does. So perhaps someone else used the website to search for your alt.

Afaik there is a profile setting somewhere to disable data api access but that would also deny addons like raiderio.

It doesn’t.

If that’s true then someone has searched me on 6 different characters. :sunglasses:

Hm based on yours it appears maybe it will search for characters related to the character that was searched for then. I am unsure why my mage was missing except that it hadn’t been played prior to my other characters being on that site.

However the FAQ states how you can remove characters: https://check-pvp.fr/faq

I want to remove one or more alt (s) from my account:

It’s possible to remove alts from the characters displayed list on Check PvP. To do that, you have to:

    1. Be connected to Check PvP website (Create an account if necessary)
    1. Go to “My account” page
    1. Click on “Manage my characters”
    1. Click on “Login to Battle.net”
    1. Allow Check PvP to access your BattleTag and World of Warcraft profile. (This information is necessary to know with which character (s) you can manage)
    1. Your character list (present on Check PvP) should be appeared, just check the box “Hidden” to hide them.

The issue is my new hunter, which I made like 4 days ago and who hasn’t done any PVP at all, who hasn’t even hit max level yet, is on the website… It showed up when I searched for my druid who is on the different faction, not that it matters I’d presume. Which is why it kind of freaks me out… I could imagine they’d either partner with or use something from other addons like RaiderIO, but I don’t have the addon installed.

It looks at account-wide achievements. The achievements, their date earned are a pretty darn reliable way to identify chars belonging to the same person. Two players having the exact same set of account-wide achievements, earned at the exact same time is pretty darn slim. Especially if you factor in Feats of Strengths that are only doable solo (like Mad World).

RIO uses the same API. The AddOn itself does not collect any data on its own. Not having it installed makes no difference whatsoever.

That’s just messed up to me… I don’t know how else to say it. Being tracked like that just feels weird, I don’t know.

I’m sure a lot of people don’t mind. I doubt it breaks any rules or anything like that at all, I guess I just wanted to vent a bit.

If you don’t want 3rd party sites show your characters, you can do this:

  1. In Bnet launcher go to Account management.
  2. In there go to Privacy.
  3. In there makes sure "Share my game data with community developers " is disabled.
