Well, I guess it’s implicit. Because otherwise it become very weird. Like I “need” it for vendor sell because I “need” money. Or I “need” it for disenchant because I “need” mats to sell to earn money. Or I “need” it for laying in the bank for my collection.
In my head it was always “need” = “I will wear it/it’s upgrade to me”, all other purposes are greed. Kinda the same logic was implemented by Blizzard, need roll is not possible if one have higher ilvl already in the slot (with exceptions, ofc).

Sometimes you can need for transmog even if you have same or higher ilvl. Just this week I asked a dude if he needed an item he won, I was second roller. It wasn’t an upgrade for him, it was for me.
He replied “I needed for Tmog”. My reaction? “Ok dude, gz!”.
Tmog is as valid as a gear upgrade if you can roll need for it, at least in a pug. Ofc this is different in a guild group, obviously.

I usually can roll need for some pieces even if I have higher item equipped.I usually don’t and pass it for someone that needs it as upgrade cause I don’t care much for Tmog(unless is something I really really want/like,which is not the case).
But some let you roll need and tmog too as far as I experienced.
Do Dungeons for veteran gear and use the catalyst to upgrade it - slow process.
Make an alt with low item level gear and do LFR on it - tedious process.
Delete all your gear on your main character so you can roll need on items in LFR - insane process.
Pray that Blizzard changes the loot system to personal loot, or that unlocking a higher difficulty tier appearance unlocks all lower difficulty variants of it - hopeless process.
That’s about it, I think.

It still baffles me that people still need to say this out loud. It befuddles me even further when I see that such comments get considerable push-back against them.
99% of players wanting these transmogs don’t even want to use them, they want the trophy tick of completing the set. And this could be done later on when the raid is soloable. These raids aren’t going anywhere. There is not great urgency in unlocking all the mogs in some LFR wing, we’ll still be here doing the same stuff in 2030 by which point we’ll have done the next three expansions.

Am I reading this correctly?
You think other players are just NPCs like they don’t even count as people?
And LFR NPCs (as they aren’t actually players in your view) don’t deserve to progress their characters with gear that would make them stronger? Because they’re just LFR plebs.
You ticking off another trophy mog in the Appearance Window is vastly more important than some pleb actually using an item.

Usually later in the patch they’ll put catch up Veteran gear which you can run through the Catalyst and collect the lower appearances. You can do this when the Season is over as well.
You can actually start doing that now with gear from the 3 Emerald Dream weekly quests.
The reason why you can’t roll on gear in LFR and Normal is because there are players in those groups that need those items as upgrades, which is more important than Vanity needs.

Does this actually work?
What’s the cooldown on item restore again?
Can only get your own tier set and the appearances you get are locked to your class, unlike the off pieces that drop in the raid, not to mention there’s also weapons.
It is another drawback with GL replacing PL. Makes collecting sets so much harder.
I only collect things my Paladin can wear or wield and even using an army of low ilvl level alts I get very little from the raid. The catalyst and vault on those alts have proven far more useful.
I think if you want to collect it on your main you’re going to have to wait until you no longer need the catalyst for gearing then convert stuff from open world content.
Well for the other tier pieces just do the same on an alt. As any piece which holds a Seasonal “Hero” unlock needs to go through the Catalyst to unlock the additional appearance anyway.
As for Weapons, I do agree that they should address this some how. But they’re only locked if you already have them at a higher level. Either just run the raid with an Alt, pick them from the vault, or prey for RNG gods to get them from TW weekly rewards.
IF you try you’ll get them.
This doesn’t work either, models obtained from tier are only eligible on that class. If you want to use a mage helm on a priest for example it has to be the larodar off piece.
So you’re ok with me hypothetically needing on items I do not need for relevant upgrades purely for the purposes of transmog as long as I do it on a 430 ilvl character? This is the part that confuses me.
Obtaining LFR appearances is outright broken right now, and I’d rather Blizzard work towards a solution that benefits all parties instead of reacting with more restrictions and calling it good.
Why would you want to use a Mage helm on a priest… would look really odd.
I always cringe hard when I see the classes wearing another classes transmog. Blizz really needs to stop doing that.
No, I’m not okay with it. But it’s much more acceptable than watching that piece of loot you really need go to someone who already has a higher ilvl version of it.
But we’ve all done it.
No it’s not, just run Veteran level gear through the Catalyst. Later in the season there will be an easy catch up system for you to get these.
Don’t pretend it’s broken, it’s not. Stop complaining.
That gets me… 6 item appearances from LFR (5 pieces tier + belt for priest) out of 21.
So just over 1/4 of the total appearances from LFR.
Guess I’ll use my preorder boost then.
This part is not true. I remember personal loot giving me all kinds of stuff where I had higher level items in that slot.
My guess that 90% of lfr raiders never set foot on normal or higher tier of raid.
I’m not really quite sure what you’re getting at here. I think you need to stop looking at these items as “appearances” and start looking at them as what they are, power upgrades used to help players progress through the content.
Just get all the veteran level gear from the world content over the coming season, and put it through the Catalyst to get the LFR transmog. You can also use low key M+ gear if you don’t mind doing M+.
Blizzard actually make a system that is fairer to players who actually need the items, but also put a system that allows you to create the appearances through other means, and people are seriously moaning about it.
The way transmog collection works at the moment is by far the easiest it has ever been. Whilst the I think the catalyst should be weekly rather than fortnightly, it’s still easy to collect these appearances over the course of the Season. Like really easy.
What I did last season was use my leftover cataclyst on low ilvl gear that turned into the lfr set
