How is BrM in M+?

So my brother is coming back to WoW and id like to gear a character up with him via mythics. Figuired id take the chance to try out tanking. Monk also happens to be my least played class.

How are BrM in mythic plus from a “fresh” 120 approach?

Hi,

well the monk allows you to kite a lot and the stagger mechanic allows you to smooth out big hits / incoming damage. You might run into trouble with assessing when to clean your stagger (which also depends on the healer who is healing you and your available CDs) and you need to get used to some details every new tank needs to learn.

That being said: If we compare the BrM mechanics with e.g. DK or Warrior it might actually be a little bit easier at the start (especially if you have a Weakaura which is showing you your ironskin brew uptime (personally, i also added a sound effect if it drops because I do not tank on a regular basis and I might miss it if things get out of control). The reason I assume this is because as a warrior your performance requires that you understand and execute your rage generation and spending consistently, as a DK you need to understand how to use your death strike and bone shield effectively. With a monk however, keeping up your ironskin brew is your basis which is not bound to a resource which means that your basic ability to stay alive is only dependend on whether you remember to keep it up.

Note: This my current view on this topic as a healer that plays BrM sometimes. More experienced tanks might have a more informed (better) view than I have.

I think this is a nice break down so thanks for that.

Not to hijack your thread OP I was just wondering the same ^^

This is very helpful, im currently using Luxthos weakaura package and its helped alot alot so far, the biggest thing for me, as youve mentioned, is when to purify. Im sure thatll come in time.

Many thanks for your responce

Weak Auras 2 is what I use and it’s great for keeping track of when spells are ready or when to use Purify.

I have it set up so it shows how much stagger I have using a colored bar, which turns green-yellow-red depending on my amount of stagger.
Then I just Purify when it starts getting high.

Brewmaster is very strong in M+.

Monks are very consistent when it comes to taking damage. Nothing really catches you by surprise because of Stagger. Also saving up healing spheres and dumping them all on Expel Harm can easily heal you for 50% of your hp, which is very likely because of Celestial Fortune.

Brewmasters are also the best tanks when it comes to Tyrannical and Necrotic affixes in my opinion.

BrM are good in mythic plus. We have great mobility which is useful for kiting. We can Los pull instantly with transcendence (great for void emissary or caster packs), and also talents like ring of peace are good utility tools for interrupting channels that can’t be kicked. We can also cure poisons and diseases and paralysis for instant, ranged cc.

BrM is very good versus bosses with heavy AA dmg due to our high base dodge and stagger mechanic. We’re good against melee packs for similar reasons. Spell damage can be an issue where its coming from multiple sources.

The key is the balance between ironskin and purify. As you gear your base stagger gets quite high so ironskin yields less raw benefits due to DR. It’s useful to have up, but you sometimes get more value from tanking without it and purifying regularly. For example when damage intake is very high and constant, it may be better to focus on purifying with your charges as one ironskin is one less purify, and an additional 20% stagger may not make a huge difference. Where damage intake is lower, ironskin is priority as your passive healing in conjunction with low healer focus means you can tank without much attention.

It’s very much something you get a feel for. It can be mixed up depending on talents. Eg blackout combo allows you to temporarily pause your stagger which can make for some very nice breathing spaces on very high damage.

You do need to be aware of high output abilities as like a DK you time your mitigation (purify) after they occur for maximum benefit.
