How is quality of the craft actually done?

I have a question about crafting quality mechanism that I wasn’t able to find anything about so far, let alone the interface which doesn’t point to anything.

I’m going to give an example for alchemy here, but this applies to anything really.
Say you have a (potion) recepy like this:

  • Skill 400 needed for 3 star
  • Skill 300 needed for 2 star.
You have Skill to make that potion as follows:
  • 300 with bad mats.
  • 390 with good mats.
You also have…20% inspiration with 100 skill bonus.

Now, do you get any benefit if you use the good mats to get to 390 skill? Is there a 90% chance you make the 3 star potion without inspiration proc?
Or only with inspired proc you’ll be able to make the 3 star potion, “wasting” the good mats 90 bonus skill effectively?

If:

  • 2 stars req 300 skill
  • 3 stars req 400 skill
  • inspiration give extra 100 skill

Then only beneffit is to have 370 skill for extra 30 skill if you can add ilustrous insight, beyon that ther is 0 benefit of having 301-399 skill

you only go to hit point when inspiration proc give you max quality or when you can add Insight fore guarantee , any extra point abow thous caps is point wasted

There’s a good Addon called Craftsim which has a simulation mode which lets you check how different rank materials affect the craft (without even having them in your bag).

Its well worth checking out.

Not quite, when being really close to the next skill level, and by close i mean 10 points and closer there is some sort of chance to get next level craft without inspiration. I crafted some cloth with 5 points short for the rank 3 and i got half the crafts with rank 3 without inspiration proc showing up.

So probably the last 10 skill points give you an increasing 10% chance per point to craft the next level, but dont quote me on that.
