I am currently using Beast mastery for its simplicity.
But Zereth Mortis gave me a ~245 ilvl polearm and I started thinking about trying it out.
How is it when it comes to dealing with outdoor content?

Personally i prefer marksman, but survival is more fun than bm personally
all 3 specs rocks, the special thing about survival besides being melee is that your mastery gives you a small heal for you and your pet which is neat

Aside from that I found up until now itās a bit painful, really have to put in some effort at times to stay alive, particularly when I pull a couple more mobs and they focus on me instead of the pet. And even if they focused on the pet it seems to die pretty fast. But again, I am nowhere near your level :3
Iām only at about 230 ilvl and I feel very squishy at times. Especially when thereās more than 2-3 mobs attacking me at the same time. Maybe I just need to git gud. Guessing BM would be insanely much easier tbhā¦

Itās awesome, as for multiple mobs just use MD. Itās easy peasy taking out groups of 6+ mobs with our aoe.
MD?? Just random words to fill the minimum
MD = misdirection spell ==> on your pet==> bomb==> boom ==> your ferocity with 10% leech take and keep agro of all the mobs you pull.
If long fight re md on your pet.
Never have issue to solo everything possible as a hunter (all specs) can do.
ferocity pet give you 10% leech and bloodlust (BL).
fecocity pet is a better tank pet than any tenacity pet when you play SV.
Use mend pet on cd if need. And Exiliration heal you and bring your pet full life in last resort.
If he die turtle or ice - tar trap / go as far you can (disengage / cheetah etc) and rez him. Or Feign death if you want to go out that fight.
So many tools ā¦
A macro to use misdirection on your pet or your focus (your tank in dj or raid) without untargeting :

I love you. You just made me understand what I was missing on (misdirection I just ignored thinking it was only relevant on BGs or dungeons). All the rest I managed to learn and understand while leveling (always played rogues and this is my first high lvl hunter). Also feel slightly stupid I didnāt manage to see it for myself 
I knew something I was doing wrong but couldnāt figure out what exactly.

Also, now Iāve got you here. What kind of pet do you use? Iāve been using an ankylodon (scalehide) cause I read it was the tankiest. Any other ferocity pet families and their specific uses?
I heard carrion birds are pretty useful for their healing reduction to enemies, and I really like spiders and bats for the spooky look but do their special abilities actually have any practical use as a SV hunter??

a wolf or a cat. But itās a personnal choice. (visual or utility).
cat have an abilty to dodge a certain amount of time (with a couldown).
Wolf have an abilty to slow the target.
They do the same dps, same leech and the BL.
If iām in world pvp or basic content end game (not leveling) like expedition farming etc ā¦ always with the cunning pet, the same i have for pvp a Raptor or Hyena for the speed movement bonus (10%) + the Masterās Call (Stops movement impairing effects, 4 sec)+ the healing reduction.
so my five pets always with me are : A hyena, an undead raptor( undead cause immune against some spells in pvp like blind/ sap etc), a wolf, a cat and an exotic pet if i have to swtich to Bm (nerver happen :o ) .
so what i need a hyena ?
Cause the UD raptor can be schakle by priest or an another spell (donāt remenber the name) by ret pal. ( so you have to switch specialy if you do Arena).
But some others hunters have different choices.

Misdirection is something I compulsively use on solo content. I miss the older times where MD reset completely when you killed a mob.

Iāve spent many an hour in petopia checking out all the pets
Spider seems to be the same as wolf to slow down enemies.
Also want a black raven and name it nevermore 
Again bats are really cool but donāt they seem useless with their special ability after they got nerfed?
Not currently doing pvp but would also like to get the undead raptor eventually.
If you are doing outside stuff
Iād also run with Camouflage talent and u can get a macro that will feign death and immediately camo, basically acts like a rogues vanish lol
Very handy for resetting when things get a lil too gnarly!

Donāt forget that you need to loot the special book in SL ( donāt remember the name in english) to tame undead pet.

Where does that drop from? Iām lvling my āretailā hunter as we speak. Lvl 41 or so now. Got 2x oondasta as pet right now.
A better drop chance on Elite / rare in Maldraxus region . So in Shadowlands ā¦
Was lucky, got it on the expedition in the big Arena on one of the champions .
Get a scalehide pet like a Kodo. They are the best for soloing.
