I remember you had to buy the EU Open Beta for WoW in your local game store – if they had any.
With Diablo IV, at least you get chicken. 
Don’t see the big deal to be honest. It’s simple cross-promotion, and the goal with these Open Beta tests is partially to drive commercial interest and partially to stress test servers.
