Eurgh… 90’s arcades. A huge pile of 20 pence pieces on the Street fighter 2 cabinet waiting your turn to be pummeled in seconds by the reigning “champ” who kept defeating the new challenger.
Didn’t bother me. i was the reigning champ.
“Hello!!! ready to go? Put your 20p in and choose your fighter, I’ll stick with Ryu…”
“Thanks mate. can I pick ken?”
“Sure, your money mate. You know his moves?”
“Yeah.”
"OK lets go… "
CPS! guile theme
"Opponent jumps at me, I back off and defend. He gets in a JRH into CLS. Tries it again.
I counter him with a SDP.
"Damn… " he starts to hold his joystick just a little harder and is noticeably pressing the buttons harder. He’s losing confidence.
"He jumps in and tries a FDP. Misses and flies over my Ryu’s head, and falls behind him.
(Ken is INCREDIBLY vulnerable on landing after a missed Shoryuken.)
My Ryu. Two CSK’s, CFP into FHDK. Ken is stunned. JFP into CFP into SDP, hitting in a four hit combo. Ken loses round 1.
Everyone else waiting their turn looks on nervously
My opponent tries a different strategy, opens with a JFK into a MTetsumaki. Ryu counters with a SDP. Mega damage as I know when to time to move to the sprite animation. Ken player now starts to panic. Throws FDP’s, forcing Ryu to block into corner. He thinks he’s got me. Last FDP. Crouching block. ken takes too long to land. Ryu throws him behind and fighters are now opposite to their starting positions, meaning the special move commands are reversed. Ken panics. Ryu jumps in with JFP, into SMP into FHDK. Stunned. Finishes with SFpinto FDP.
Ken defeated. Player laughs and we say good game. I turn to crowd watching, all looking at each other.
They allow me to continue to defeating all the CPU opponents in order and let me walk off the machine to give them a chance.
Ahhhhhh the good ol days of waiting your turn, and when complete strangers didn’t throw tantrums because they lost on a videogame.
