How to "Git Gud"?

So I have been playing this game far longer than I like to admit. recently I wanted to try my luck in arenas, I have looked at guides, tacts and how to play, mostly looking at Skill Capped.

So I know what to do, how to do it, but yet when push comes to show, I overthink, I mess up, I lose fights that I see I should easily win. I panic…

How do I deal with this constant messing up I do, how do I “Git Gud”.
How to keep your cool and see all?

Thanks

play 10k arena games

It’s hard to say mate. Probably you just need to play a lot. Theory is only a part of it - practice is the most important.

It’s also good when you have very good partners who can give you tips about your gameplay.

Rogue is quite difficult class to play. I also see you are Assassination but you play it with Venthyr. I’d start with switching to Necro since it’s way stronger for Assassination spec. You may just wait for 9.1.5 here to avoid renown grind. Other than that ask Shadenox. While he is a douchebag sometimes it’s hard not to admit he knows what he is doing:

Other than that - just watch rank 1 players. Pikaboo would be good bet since he plays Assassination a lot. The problem might be time he plays. He is from California so late night time might be a problem. Maybe you can subscribe to him and rewatch vods.

You have great approach though. You will do fine.

You can play 10k games and still be a challenger. A certain DH that frequently posts here on forums is a proof for that.

To actually improve OP needs not only to watch guides but also watch other players, on streams etc. Watch what abilities they use when. Then get omnibar and track those abilities on your own.

I’m always honest. Bitter truth better than sweetest lie my friend.

I play on duelist level since forever and never tried to push higher and never played for this target with non friends but what i wanna say, since the moment i started to play i wished to be the best as much as i can, no matter duel it, arena or bg. Be a self-assured, be faster, be stronger, Choose life

Such a cheap shot though. Tsk tsk tsk. Very Rogue-like. But I’ll take the compliment said just after !

Btw disagreeing with an opinion or another =/= being a douchebag !

I guess I will start my training montage then, thanks for the helpfull tips!

I’m a douchebag sometimes to and it’s not about agreeing but attitude. Anyway I respect skills.

Play around 10000 arena matches with the correct mindset.

Don’t just do the same thing over and over again.

Watch good players who play your spécialisation and try your best. Since you’re Assa, you could pay a visit to Shadenox’s youtube channel since he explains what he’s doing in detail. This will at least bring you knowledge of what works (comps) and a rough idea of how each matchup should feel like.

Always look for improvement where you can find it - be it your UI, build but also your mechanics.

One thing that I’d suggest would be solo grinding a lot, always with different partners and without voice. While this sounds counter intuitive, if you take it as a proper exercise, this will teach you to maximize your impact in a game (1), it will teach you non-verbal communication with your teammate and how to react according to what they do without typing or voice comms (2) and the many trials and failures you’ll have on the journey will remove any kind of ladder anxiety and you’ll be mentally resilient eventually (3).

Of course, if on the way you find someone you enjoyed a lot playing with, add them to bnet and play together occasionally. But don’t handicap yourself into only playing when your specific teammate is online. I had for a long time and I believe I missed out on a lot of practice and actual arena gametime because of this, which is why now I just queue in the LFG if I want to play, unless some friends are on. Once you have enough confidence in your ability, you won’t really care about CR or tanking since you know you can just get it back so you don’t end up sitting on a rating threshold until you have all your gear and miss out on many games.

Good luck !

well its hard to allway be neutral and calm and professional. but you can try as good as possible.

noone is perfect

It is also a very overlooked practise to take a few moments to think about why you lost, or why you won, in between two games, so as to avoid reproducing mistakes, or polishing good moves.

Asking yourself “what went wrong” and managing to identify the root cause will go a long way.

Don’t waste too much time on watching skill-capped and other streamers if you are a beginner (in arena).

The most important thing is learning the big offensive and defensive CDs of all classes/specs and how to react to them.

There are 2-3 things all people below 1.6k do.

  1. not instantly popping defensive CDs when the other team uses offensive CDs
  2. overextending and LoS-ing healers
  3. not cross-CCing (e.g. CC on kill target + healer to secure a kill)

As a rogue you need to think ahead a bit more than other classes. You want to set up kill windows with kidney shot, blind and sap which requires you to keep an eye on DRs and the enemies’ trinkets.

Imo rogue is probably the hardest melee to play, especially for a beginner.

It’s really tricky VS some kind of comp but the hardest thing to do imo is to not die.

Play games and have the mindset that you want to learn. A good way is to play 1 comp, not switch between different comps all the time, you need time to learn how to do this and that in certain matchups and playing different comps every session makes that difficult.

Also finding specific people to play with is good

First you gotta get all the basics down:

  • keybinds
  • macros
  • how your spec works

You shouldnt go overboard with macros though, you’re probably best off with simple focus macros for crucial abilities like kick, stun and blind.

Once you’re comfy controlling your character, you gotta work on your gamesense: positioning, choice of targets, understanding your win conditions. Id strongly recommend watching your own gameplay (easily done by streaming on twitch with save broadcast enabled). You’ll be amazed by how different the games you play actually look. You have a completely different perception as a viewer and it’ll be a lot easier to understand which mistakes you’re making.

Well, I should not be a beginner, I have played this class… this specific character since the release of Naxxramas in Vanilla, granted he was a Nelf then.

When I have tried dueling friends I have played with for years, they say I still play Rogue like it was Wrath… And I guess that makes sense as that was the last time I really did pvp before I started roleplaying …
It is just so many new systems, and so much to think about. Watching Shadenox vids now I have no clue what is going on, hehe.

I do not even know what addons he has. as I only have Baggon and Recount :stuck_out_tongue:

Being condescending about it however = douchebag.

I thought rog gets 3k if He creates the Char ?
