I am a noob tank and it seems I can do the npc dungeons just fine.
How do I progress so I can start m+ dungeons. For some reason I can’t learn the current/next dungeon pool before I even start doing m0. I am noob cause I have not played tank ever (wotlk vanilla last time) and have not played several expansions. But for some reason a m+ pool incluses old dungeons I have no chance in to learn… Why is the heroic pool not the same as the current m+ pool, that would solve a lot of my problems…
It is. Only normal pool consists of current expansion dungeons.
That is not a bad idea .for time being you can go in as DPS in such dungeons on m+ and try to see what the tank is doing .
for routes you can use mythic dungeon tools addon and see routes of other people . keystone.guru is good website for such purpose .look for routes with pug friendly or" just starting out in keys " in description and title .vitamin p user normally has very nice and easy routes .
You progress through trial and error. Do not be afraid to mess up. Do not let toxic people scare you away from what you like, you can be a perfect tank and there will still be ungrateful whiners in your group.
As for routes do not even bother until you do high keys, and by that time you’ll know the optimal route trough trials and tribulations. Press W routes this season is king (in low-mid tier keys)!
First and foremost. NEVER… and I repeat again. NEVER start your tanking progression in random pugs. Its full of hyienas, just ready to tear you limb from limb the moment you sneeze at the wrong time. Communities or guilds is your only salvation.
Now if you must do it with pugs then I can only suggest watching some guides and videos on youtube. Expecting some random pug to actually help you is the same as entering a starving Lion’s cage while wrapped in bacon and asking “kindly to not get eaten by it”.
Just throw yourself into heroics and do your best, you might fail, that’s ok. You learn and grow stronger.
Ain’t nothing to it but to do it, grab some popular route for the m+ dungeon tool addon, watch some recaps of the dungeon mechanics and important mobs and just blast
Never listen to any damage dealer trying to lecture you about their preferred route or what their friend does, or how they ran their last key, run your tactic, don’t get bossed around or it will just devolve into chaos
What exactly does that mean to you?
#1 Get the right build.
#2 You want to set up your UI.
#3 Get the delve belt (google DISC belt WoW)
#4 Get used to the UI in nhc/hc dungeons, you will notice something is missing, it’s always like that.
#5 If you are serious about tanking and plan to push as high as you can, get the addon Mythic Dungeon Tools - MDT, here you can make a route (or get it from another tank) so you know what pull.
#6 Check some videos of several tanks doing a dungeon but make sure you don’t watch high keys (like 18), check for something in the range of 12-14
#7 Right now you can learn only a few dungeons, assuming there will be no changes in season 3 but generally speaking you can and should just get familiar with tanking. (rotation, cd usage, ccs etc) Just do some low keys, like 2-4, depends on what gear you got.
#8 Don’t worry about the dungeon pool too much. Season 3 is soon and things might change, most people kinda learn from zero then.
#9 Try to figure out what issues you are actually facing so you can ask specific questions and receive help.
Btw if you do not feel comfortable yet tanking with your class I would suggest trying to do the mage tower as a tank.
It is a really good teaching tool for your defensives, getting agro, dpsing as tank, and moving around. Bonus points on being solo and not caring about other people.
By the time you get it down, I think you will be more than confident in your spec abilities, and can jump ahead to try and get used to playing with other people.
Fundamentals.
- Keep Aggro
- Don’t die.
- Don’t overlap big damage reduction, you have to have to be able to go the distance.
Start here then go from there. As you improve as a tank, you will learn when the damage is coming in. As a rule of thumb if you are pulling big, you should be rotating Cooldowns and DON’T GO IN RAW . If you don’t have say…shield block up on pull (even though you should have shield charge on pull to give it), a cooldown has to be used. In many pulls you will have to use a CD going in anyway.
Too many tanks charge in and just die.
I feel called out! This be me whenever I tank as a bear (zero rage, zoomies; charging!).
My poor healer.
Heroic is the same dungeon pool as M+
When we get weekly quests for dungeons not in the pool we have to do normal.
For me being a good tank means that I can handle various situations.
So I’d focus on knowing my class (buttons) well in a difficulty that allows it, and then gradually move forward.
If that doesn’t apply to moderm WoW then the only other option is to park the game and join during the first days of a new expansion when learning is still normal and accepted.
Besides the obvious “take some friends along”.
If you have to pick between tanking and playing modern, which one would you choose?
Anniversary has a great community, people accept that content is new to some people.
MoP has just launched which sounds new to you, based on the OP.
Very simple.
- watch videos
- make m0 group and write in the title “learning” or soemthing.
- wait for ages cause game ded atm.
I did that a lot back in the day with arena and I never had any issues with toxicity. Just be straight forward and honest. Maybe say it again before starting so people can leave if they want to.
Optionally: There’s 1-2 discord for finding groups that are very “non competitive”. That might help too.
