I’m a new returning player guys, and I’m lost. I heard you get them once you unlock “adventure mode” or something, all I know is I made an alt, and am currently doing the DF story line. Am I doing this right? I want to make sure I get the portals. Thank you!
OK, that’s normal! 
A character can unlock the portals from Orgrimmar or Stormwind to the hubs ofthe various expansions in either of two ways:
- Outlevel the expansion. I won’t go through all the numbers, but by the time your alt is level 70, they should all be open, or
- Play through the questline at the start of each expansion until you reach the point where the portal is open.
What you heard about “Adventure Mode” aka “Chromie Time” is the second approach. Chromie, outside the Embassy in Orgrimmar or Stormwind (it’s on the map), will give your character a quest to go to any expansion. And you can go back and ask for a different expansion anytime. So if you are in a hurry to open those portals, though there is no real pressure to do so, you can go to Chromie, take the quest for an expansion, follow it through until you get the portal, then go back and ask for the next expansion.
Personally, I wouldn’t bother. But it is an option.

Okay so if I want to do shadowlands, but skip the campaign can I do this as well?
What does “do shadowlands, but skip the campaign” mean? Doing Shadowlands is doing the campaign, AFAICS.
You can definitely not skip the Shadowlands campaign unless you have done it before on another alt.
You may be able to skip it if you have, but I don’t know how. As I explain in a thread just below
