Hunter Pet - srs Blizzard!

Currently at lvl 26 and have a wolf with a meat only diet.

Are there any dishes you recommend or is it a case of just getting better quality meat and then cooking that?

Just try to stuff him with any white item that resembles food. I tend to do it. To see which items are actually considered food like fungus and fruit etc.

In your case with a wolf it’s trickier. When you are around lvl 30 go to hillsbrad and do the turtle meat cooking quest. Get that skill and make some nice food for your pet

I have noticed a lot lately that posters blaming blizzard/bugs etc for their own stupidity.
I mean feeding a pet lvl 1-5 food?!
If your new to the game, fair enough, but ask a question rather than blame blizzard/bugs. “srs blizzard!” haha

Just fyi. The pet’s were buggy as hell in classic too. They would pull entire instances if given the chance. Put it on passive use command macros to control it.

Use higher quality food - if you cook the boar meat into roasted boar or boar ribs ect… The food has a value. You’re using a low level, low quality ingredient that’s why you’re experiencing the issue. Cook it up or farm better mats. Croc meat, tiger meat ect.

Not just classic. I remember it still being an issue in Cata. Blackrock caverns. When you’d jump down to the second boss. Pets would run around to get down pulling mobs.

Things that affects your pet’s happiness include the level of food (needs to be on the same sort of level as the pet - simple way to look at it is would you eat level 5 food to try and regen your health? Probably not, so don’t expect it to make your pet happy, either), retraining your pet (makes it harder to keep happy), the pet dying (you don’t like dying, and neither does your pet) and just keeping it out and idle while you’re AFK in Stormwind. Not out in the wild? Dismiss your pet until you need it again.

But specifically, your issue is definitely the food you’re feeding it (PSA: boars are the best. The literally eat anything, even Mage bread).

My bear is vegan he’s been living of bread so far

No, fishing is pretty sick for all classes.

Depends on the food. Cooking fish mostly doesn’t cost anything, cooking meat can be a waste of money if you have to buy spices and cooking a food doesn’t necessarily increase its level. I personally never feed cooked food and some meat that drops a pet will eat uncooked when I can’t.

You need to feed it until it’s happiness is at the highest and green, not just feed it until it’s not unhappy. You want it as happy as it can be.

The level of food is just about how many points of happiness it gets. So the lowest it will eat might give it 7 per tick, higher level 35 per tick, so you’ll need more lower than higher to get the same result that’s all.

Let him finish eating one meal before you give him the next. How many points he gets per tick should be in your combat log. Get him really, really happy, so he’s green and grinning, or he will drop fast.

Another mistake people are making, is getting a pet, feeding it a bit, then afking with it out. All the time they’re afk the pet is losing happiness and will eventually leave, if its loyalty and happiness levels are low enough when you afk.

Feed it up and dismiss or stable it before you afk, or log off properly, or when you log back on, it could be gone. Even more important if it’s a rare pet. Once he’s best friend and you feed him to keep him green and grinning you should be fine, but before then, beware. :grinning:

You just hunt higher level beasts, duh. Or you can just buy the food from a vendor. Higher level food gives more happiness.

fishing can be, like you said “pretty sick” for all classes, but I still do think it is best for hunters and their pets

Hard to classify as best to 1 class, when everyone benefits equally from the regen either it be caster or melee. Add in the stam/spirit buff or the Mp5 buff you get from certain food types.

But I get what you say.

You do know that the meat from vendor can be used for your pet, right?
You dont need to get the “raw” meat that drops…
You can even give cooked food for your pet.

The confusion has been caused because every area I go to I’ve farmed the Boars for Boar meat. I think what needs to be made clearer is whether Boar Meat is all the same level regardless of area. As far as i can see the level doesn’t show on the item description. Therefore even though i’m feeding it from meat from the appropriate level mob, it is still low level meat.

Haven’t seen anything that makes this clear and therefore if you didn’t play classic (me) then how would you know this…

Meat or fish with the same name is all the same level, regardless of the area or animal level. Otherwise it wouldn’t stack either. If you’re not sure how many points of happiness your pet is getting per tick when you feed it something, check your combat log.

There’s another item that confuses people over level. Anti-venom and other poison removers. If it says ‘removes poisons up to level 25’ it means the level of poison, not the level of mob, or your own level. Some level 35 mobs might use level 25 poison for example and so the poison remover would still work.

So the level of mob doesn’t necessarily relate to what it drops, or what it attacks you with.

Another thing to remember is, when feeding your pet, make sure you wait til he’s finished eating before you feed him again. If you look at the combat text, you see how much happiness he gains. Wait for it to stop, the feed him the next chunk.

There is already a blue post regarding pet behaviour

It is working as expected - exactly in line with their data

Why are Hunters the only class that make multiple threads with the same complaints?

Just work with what you have and listen to the advice of those who are doing so

To be clear, this is what reduces pet happiness:

Dismissing
Dying
Distance reaching X feet

Edit:Also curses
