Is it a retail bash thread to say that I appreciate the freedom classic brought to the game? I missed out on classic and I just like that they let you do whatever you want.
Sadly with Cataclysm, the talent trees provide less freedom, but I liked it that I could pick a hybrid build between 2 specs rather than force all my talent trees in a single one.
If I want to level up a shaman with a 2hander, I am free to do so. In retail this is also an option, but none of my attacks will work.
If I want to equip my mage with strength cloth items and wack things to death, I am free to do so. In retail, strength would have no effects on my auto attacks.
I just appreciate the freedom the devs gave to the players. I understand that it might not be the most optimal builds, and that a lot of people just choose the cookie cutter build, but to a casual and RPer like me, I really like it that I can create characters the way I like it.
Original WoW was indeed amazing back then. It’s one of the reasons I never wanted to touch Classic when they released it, as I didn’t want to spoil the memories that I have of leveling my very first character.
In contrast I do not miss a single thing about Classic. Back in it’s day it was great, but going back it makes me realise how far the game has come and how many modern conveniences are now included as standard. Classic is slow, clunky and frustrating (for me). Others love it and that’s great.
But as far as I’m concerned those systems and ways should stay very separate. Let Classic be Classic and equally let Retail be Retail.
Glad you’re enjoying it so much. Do you just play Vanilla? Or do you venture into Hardcore, SoD, Cata?
I don’t think it is off-topic as it is suggesting things someone would like in retail, they just happen to be from classic. If you posted this is in classic, you’d probably get told to post it in retail.
The talent tree give’s you in classic the illusion of more choice compared to retail now which is simply not tree there was and always will be cookie cutter specs you needed in raids/dungeons.
Oh I fully agree but there’s nothing wrong with a discussion about it. I believe actually it may be where our current talent tree system might have come from? I could be mistaken.
No, because retail objectively has more freedom to play how you want to play overal.
It does have this; not so much the being able to be hybrid specs; but within the spec you definitely have choices. And the class tree allows for some specializing.
It’s some players themselves who have become limited by following the meta; but that’s their own doing.
The freedom is there.
I was enjoying Season of Discovery a lot at first, though the cracks have since begun to show. It’s very nostalgic and I do miss the tone and atmosphere of the game world as it was originally. I never enjoyed Cataclysm’s ‘quirky’ humour.
There’s some new stuff to see in the form of rune acquisition, but finding people to actually team up with for quests and dungeons is a real pain. My Classic character is stuck in the Plaguelands, desperately trying to find someone to do the plague cauldron quests with.
I cannot kill enemies around it quickly enough to clear the way, as they respawn before I can get to the objective. I almost got close enough once or twice, only for more than one enemy to attack at once and kill my character. Frustratingly someone did arrive at that point and exploited the opportunity to run in themselves.
I joined a guild that promised to be social and help out players who were still leveling - but nobody wanted to come and help me out with group quests. Of my existing friend group, I am the only one who even wants to dip back into Classic.
So overall, it’s a mixed bag for me. I really like it in theory but in practice too much has changed on a cultural level to the point where it’s much harder to find people willing to help each other out, especially if you’re not aiming to get to level sixty as quickly as possible.
They did have cookie cutter specs in raids and dungeons even way back in 2005 when vanilla came out in EU , you did not have to follow it but if you did not you were gimping yourself and the team.
