I’ve been healing without a healing addon, just using mouse over macros alongside a frame UI like Pitbull or Z-perl without issue.
Not quite. It’s easier to set up mouseover healing with Clique than writing half a dozen macros. It’s also easier to have damage & healing spells on the same keybind that way: damage spells on the action bars, healing bound to the same keys with Clique.
For example, if I mouseover a party member, and press 1
, that’s a lifebloom. But if my cursor is not on a party member, I’ll moonfire my target instead (or rake it if in cat form). Possible with macros, but a pain to type it all in, and change them if I want to rearrange my spells.
With Clique & action bars, I’ll just drag my spells around on the bar if I want to rearrange them, and I’ll rebind them in Clique if I want to rearrange my heals. No maintenance of long and complicated macros required.
I use Grid2
It doesn’t give you the ez-mode click to heal/decurse crap (unless you configured it to not sure) and just gives you bigger health panels (just like the panels you can enable if you turn raider interface on for groups)
/cast [@mouseover, help, exists, nodead] [help, nodead] Lifebloom; [harm, nodead, talent:1/3] Moonfire; [harm, talent:2/3, form:2] Rake
It’s not that complicated, but yes, it’s easier to use and maintain it with the addon.
It’s more complicated than with an addon, especially if you want to add on-use trinkets or the like. It’s also harder to maintain, when you want to change Moonfire to Sunfire. Not hard, but… annoying.
I wasn’t trying to say I see everyone as cheating just that it feels like cheating to me if I’d do it. I also find it weird that people would need addons to do any of the content, surely the tools available should be enough? Then I wonder if those who complain mythics and raids are too easy have tried not using addons.
What are healing addons doing?
I use ElvUI for my (party) frames/actionbars and Clique for mouseovers.
I literally only use elvui for my addons. And that is just a visual change. Ive had no issues healing heroic and up to +12(13? Forget how far I got).
The only issue is sometimes a frame click wont go through and youll heal the wrog target. But this is very rare and almost never a big issue
i tried vudho but it was too much of a pain to set up so i gave up.
blizzard default ui frames are really good imo, i use accountwideraidprofiles to have the same raid profiles on all my characters.
so ye, you don’t need an addon, just use mouse-over macros.
I honestly don’t think the difficulty in healing comes from being fast with your targetting. As others have said it’s more about quick decision making and good awareness of what’s happening. Addons can help with that, but playing without addons is fine too.
One thing I like to do if I have to heal with the default UI is to activate the option to always use raidframes. You can easily reposition and configure those to suit your needs.
The default UI frames for healing are actually pretty darn good. Don’t feel bad about not using a healing addon. I find that the default one shows you everything you need to see.
I don’t use any healer addons and I am doing pretty well. The only thing I do is that I have changed the settings to have Raid UI for party groups too, and that is all I need to keep track of what I need to.

I’ve been using this setup for years to heal raids and dungeons, and I’ve never had complaints. You honestly don’t need much to heal, just a level head on your shoulders.
ElvUI frames + mouseover spells is what I use, I think any other addons are highly unnecessary and mostly used for personal preference.
I’m another one who just uses mouseover macros, with the Blizzard raid frames. You don’t need a healer addon if you don’t want one. Just find what works for you.
i main healer and only use mouseover macros and an addon called: Blizzard raid frames - bigger buffs.
just set your party/raid frame to a suitable place (i set mine at the buttom in the middle) and mouseover your heals.
a sample of the kind of macros i use:
#showtooltip Power Word: Shield
/use [@mouseover,help,nodead][help,nodead][@player] Power Word: Shield
this macro is bae because you can also target a random person that isn´t in your group. it also targets you if you don´t target anyone, and a simple mouseover on your party frame will target that player,
That’s a very helpful tip!
Thank you.
