Gigabyte B360 Aorus Gaming 3 Wifi, ATX, 4xDDR4, S1
Intel Core i7-8700, 3.2GHz/4.6GHz, 12MB, S1151
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 G1.Gaming 6GB
32GB RAM and new SSD where WOW is on
My problem is that recently I had to put graphic quality in raids to 1 to make it playable.
I know my graphic card is dated, and am looking for replacing it.,
However want to know if there is anything else I can do to make my machine perform better in raids specifically.
Especially when raid is full graphics are horrible.
Performance has gone down in war within.
Any suggestions welcome!
Also I know i possible also need to get a new power module if I want to replace graphics card making it even more expensive. Need to know for sure that it wll help a lot to replace card!
In raids, there are two performance limitations - the world state (who, where, when, and how) which can cause one CPU core to reach 100% load and it will limit FPS. Then particle effects - in some fights and trash pulls if a lot of effects go at the same time it can overwhelm the GPU (usually pixel fill rate - how fast the memory subsystem works and then how fast it can be rendered).
If you are lowering it to “1” and it improves FPS then it can be particle effects - you can try higher quality preset but limiting particle effects. In the end, you would need a stronger modern CPU and then a better GPU while still getting performance problems randomly in WoW due to their regressions and weird bugs.
Not sure if you are talking about the OPs GPU?
Anyways, in his case the CPU is a MUCH bigger bottleneck in raids.
WoW is mostly singlethreaded and thus VERY CPU-limited when there are many players and/or NPCs near, especially while in combat with all the addons interacting via combatlog.
Let me give you guys an example, check this DF CPU-benchmark here, look at the bottom;
As you can see in this case (a 5man dungeon) the FPS on a 8700K was around 60 FPS on average.
My 5800X3D about twice that.
Now let me tell you that i have drops to the 40s in 20man raids and drops below 30 FPS on some intense 30m HC bosses like Rash on pull with BL or when certains things happen in the fight.
If you were in the same raid with me at that time with the usual addons and Weakauras, then you should have half of these FPS, so drops to 20 and even 10 in some rare cases.
Now if we go to the upper end of CPU performance, the currently fastest CPU for WoW and most gaming in general, the Ryzen 9800X3D, you would still have some drops below 60, but not as bad or frequently.
tldr; the only way to gain a significant amount of performance is to upgrade to a recent Ryzen X3D chip (you should stay away from the 13/14th Intel gen because of some big issues with degradation).
You could keep the 1060 for some time if you are only playing in 1080p/60hz.
Sorry I am the original poster had some issues with character profile!
Yes I heard the CPU is a problem too.
So i checked the purchase date of pc. It is September 2018.
That is older then I thought because it is still in excellent shape, except for this problem.
Although I didn’'t buy a bad one, I now feel bad of investing in a videocard with this old system
So I am going to test some graphic settings.
Problem is mostly i larger raids and bgs.
Maybe I can extend the life of the pc and start thinking of buying a new one in 2026 or so.
Shame weakauras are so problematic.
Thanks for all the tips and advise.
I checked the profile and enabled it. Not been in any massive raid yet but will see.
For now I first start looking for new pc screens, because those I can upgrade without problem, they are old, and one of them very very old.
Then I will have good screens to go with the new desktop next year or so.
Just remember, when you get a higher resolution screen like 1440P, your GPU will have to work alot harder and your FPS will go down.
But don’t buy a 1080P display in 2025 anymore, unless your main game is something like counterstrike and you want 360hz
I am first going to decide what I buy before I buy, It is just I wont go for cheapest option for either screens or pc, so spreading the budget a bit sounds interesting.
You’re going to have to upgrade that anyways, since Microsoft has removed 8th, 9th and 10th gen processors from support list for Windows 11 24H2, which may carry over to this game. However that depends on Microsoft telling developers here. Usually it carries over shortly afterwards when that becomes official with a release.
The 8th gen cpu’s are old now, 7 or so years ago which again. Think you’re going to have to upgrade to a newer motherboard/cpu combination. Windows 10 has free security until end of October this year and then it’s paid. And if we have further Windows 11 big updates, don’t think 8th - 10th processors will be supported at all. I’m expecting even first gen Ryzen 1000 and 2000 processors to get put on EOL as well, probably entire DDR4 so would move to even 5000 Ryzens.
Choice is Ultra Core 200 or Ryzen 7000 or 9000 processors now. Graphics would need to be upgraded as well, but wouldn’t recommend RTX50 at the moment, too few in units and far too costly. If you can, a 4060 is decent at about £249. Failing that, Intel Arc or a AMD Radeon card. (Due to seeing some 5070ti’s going for over £1,000 which again, wouldn’t recommend buying at that price.)
If you just play WoW, Arc or Radeon will be fine for the task. Just midrange specs have moved on since 7 years ago, so definitely worth moving up the ladder, then do it again in 5-7 years time again.
Remove an option for vendors to buy a license for a system on such hardware. Not actual hardware support. But the CPU is very old anyways.
RX 9070 and 9070 XT reviews are tomorrow, and reviewers are saying it’s way, way better value than RTX 5070 Not to mention often sales on previous Radeon generations. Intel Battlemage is getting better and better as well.
That’s not hard to beat though
FSR 4 seems pretty good so far, not as good as DLSS 4 but good enough for most players i would say.
Now we just need to wait and see if the support is there… cause FSR 3.1 support hasn’t been the best so far.
