There was for example, in the gnome starting zone next to the frozen lake, a gnome named Jarvi.
I looked it up and apparently “jarvi” in Finnish means lake.
Now some of you might want to say that’s not very creative but I disagree.
Maybe they still do this and I just have stopped noticing, but I don’t see such things ingame anymore and if I do then they fly right over my head just like compliments and/or feedback.
Popular culture is one thing, considering how obvious most of the references are…
I’m talking about slightly more obscure stuff like the one I mentioned, I mean who other than the Finns knows a word of Finnish?
What prompted my search to begin with was finding out that Sam Lake of Remedy (creator of control, the og max payne and alan wake) is in fact Finnish and his real surname isn’t Lake but Jarvi. Then after a while I made a gnome and saw this npc by the lake
I still want to know why Foreman Varric screams “D…B…M…” as he plummets to his demise after you turf him out of his machine. Did his DBM not warn him of “Forced Ejection”?
Are we even playing the same game? To me, literally just from the title, it seems that you are NOT PAYING ATTENTION to anything in the game, because there is a lot of that - everywhere.
every expansion is absolutely teeming with them. if you encounter an NPC with a strange name, click on a book or note or enter a weird looking area, you can flip a coin and its a 50/50 chance its either original and has nothing to do with anything, or is an extremely on the nose reference to something in real life or another IP.
as an example, the entirety of the Machine Speakers are essentially the Adeptus Mechanicus from Warhammer 40k, and the Void is extremely similar to Chaos in WH40K.
There still are, it’s just that they’re too obscure for us to understand that it’s an easter egg. In your example, I would never think of that because I don’t speak Finnish.
But in general, when you see something that seems odd or out of place, chances are that it is an easter egg.
They still do, just yesterday I actually read a few lines of dialog with and npc who rounded off with a “greed is good…” which is a warcraft 3 cheatcode for more money, a nice callback.
