Please be aware I am only posting this video as example of such “recap videos”, not as advertisement for the game!
As you can see above, this video explains the “Light and Dark Saga” of the game to new players.
And as it is right now, new players in World of Warcraft are basically dropped into a mess of expansions offered, with no clue what is going on or what to play first. The game is missing a clear “red line” for its story a new player can follow.
I play this game since mid-BfA and had to read the entire Sylvanas Book from Christie Golden just to understand the character and her motivations. I also had to read “the chronics of war” (a collection of the 4 warcraft books covering the first 2 games) just to understand what was going on before Warcraft 3. I had to listen to Audible Audio Book of “Rise of the Lich King” to understand Arthas story… And most importantly, I had to watch most of PLatinumWoWs videos just to get a brief understanding of other aspects of the lore.
For a game that claims to be story driven, this is the entirely wrong way. Having a new player look up videos or wikis on the internet or even read an entire book just to understand the story of the game, is a very horrible experience.
If the “start with recent expansion” thing is going to remain and new players not being forced to play each expansion at least once with their very first character on the account, then you need AT LEAST put something like this in the game.
Yes, a new player could also just play the content itself (as I mentioned), but most of them would probably prefer just to watch max. 30 minutes of cutscene material (at worst) instead of playing several days to understand the story, before they can enjoy the new expansion (together with some friends probably).
I am a Day 1 player of the entire Destiny franchise… And even I don’t have the nerves and patience to explain then entirety of the story to a “New Light” player in Destiny 2 so they understand the basic story line… Hence why Bungie added this cutscene (or will add it to the game with Lightfall).
Chromie could serve this purpose as well.
