I’m playing Diablo and I’ve been thinking about not having a poison based caster class in WoW. Something like a Witch Doctor could be really nice. How is this not a thing yet anyway?
I mean Rogues can poison sure, but this new class could be mainly about poison, or at least one specialization could be poison. And we would get cool spells, like plague, withering, decay whatever that is poison themed and does poison dot, and debuffs, like the Rogue abilities do, or even something new.
What else would be cool is a burst ability where you build up your dots and then you can explode them all at once for a large amount of single target burst damage. Mechanically something like the Rupture ability for the D4 Barbarian, or Spiritborn’s passive, Noxious Resonance, but a poison spell of course.
Another spec could be summoning firebats and frogs, or something completely new, I just loved the Witch Doctor in D3, and now the Spiritborn Then perhaps a healing spec where you build up power by taking away the essence of your enemies and use that pool to restore your allies.
I’m sure many would find this class intriguing, I mean for one I know I’d love it.
It is a thing. Its called Dots. You have 2 specs: Affliction Warlock and Feral Druid. Caster and Melee respctevely. DKs are ~ something inbetween a pet and a dot class.
And FYI they are super hard to balance. Because things need to be alive for long enough to do some respectable DPS. If they die too fast then you dont do DPS.
And they also have a problem in ST vs AoE balance. Because if you make dots work for a raid boss (for example) then what happens if you do the same rotation for 2 targets? Or 3 targets? Or 5 targets? Well its ST x 5. Much, MUCH more than any other class.
So in AoE under some target threshold you do garbage dps. And above some X mob count you do stratospherical ammount of DPS. Like DKs currently are with their dots.
Warlocks don’t do poison damage. You see it’s about the flavour. It’s not enough that you use dots. With that mentality there should only be like 3 classes in total. The world would be a very boring place…
Feral is bleed, lock is shadow dmg, so totally different things ^^
As for your other points, sure it would take resources to balance, but every class needs that kind of attention. I mean eventually we will have another class/race so why not something like this one?
Oh, and as you can see, I play balance druid, so I know what you are talking about. It is a problem to be solved for sure, but then again with that mentality there would be no dots at all in the game…
Poisons are just dots with a different color. Its the mechanics and gameplay that matters.
Because in the end, its the same gameplay. Apply the dot. And watch it tick. Reaply before it expires. Its what a poison does. Its what a bleed does… all dots do that.
You left out “to me”. And obviously it shouldn’t be the very same mechanic. Many classes have dots and they don’t all feel the same, because they have different abilities with different mechanics. What are we even arguing about here? Just be a bit more open to ideas maybe instead of trying to drag others’ down with this nihilism? Thanks!
Gameplay >>> ALL. Not just on this point on Dots. In others as well. Like alliance vs. horde. Its better for the overall gameplay to have more people to play with. Or merging the AH. Its better for the overall economy to have more offer on the market.
This is a known fact in game delopment.
So do you have a point that you want a green affliction warlock? Sure. You do. Would it look awesome? Absolutely.
But would it play almost identically to the “purple” affliciton warlock? Also true. <— this is the drawback. The limition of why your idea cannot be put in place. Unless you make up ways to differentiate it from a warlock. And most importantly, mechanics that can be balanced out properly. With out being too weak or too OP.
I am realistic. I look at things from a practical point of view. So I dont understand why you keep insulting me this way.
Dk, sh priest, warlock say hi. At least these classes has other things that can separate them from the rest.
This is why I dislike most of the class ideas about necro and tinker, because they dont offer anything new, and this one is no different.
I’m afraid it’s the same reason why there isn’t a necromancer class - the archetypes and various flavors of it already exist.
In order to create a Witch Doctor (or a Necromancer) - a dotter class, you would need to create three specializations for it that are visually and mechanically different from each other as well as the three specs of Death-Knights, the three specs of Warlocks and a Shadow Priest. In your case of a poison-based class, it would also have to be different from the three Rogue specs.
Is there enough mechanical and visual flavor to make that happen? Honestly, I don’t think there is enough stuff Blizz could squeeze out of this theme to make it happen.
Personally I would love a poison dot class, because I enjoy them in every game. I dont think we will every see a ranged dot class, simply because its very hard to balance
I guess it’s more of a Diablo thing, where they have necromancers and witch doctors with poison spells. Poison nova is an iconic one shooting poison bolts in all directions, at least that’s how it was in Diablo 2.
